Top 5 School Teams of the Weekend

BECOME A PATRON

After one of the most important weekend’s of the schools rugby calendar so far, this week’s Top 5 features some of the season’s biggest contenders.

There were some staggeringly good games of rugby, with the Daily Mail Trophy being truly shaken up and some serious head to heads between some of the best teams in the country.

Top 5 School Teams of the Weekend:

Bradford Grammar School

This season has been a tough one for Bradford Grammar School, who were so impressive last season. They have won just two games, the last one coming back in mid October. However against Ashville College this weekend they were quite outstanding as they outclassed their opponents for a brilliant 63-3 victory and a place in our Top 5.

Kirkham Grammar School

This week was the most important week of the season for Kirkham Grammar School as they faced two of their toughest opponents of the season, Sedbergh and Woodhouse Grove. In midweek they beat Sedbergh, closing the gap on their Cumbrian rivals in the Daily Mail Trophy, before they put the icing on the cake over 2013 champions Woodhouse Grove on Saturday. They beat the Yorkshire side 20-6, pushing them down to 10th in the table, and elevating themselves to fourth and with a great chance of pushing higher.

Millfield

Millfield started this season off quite slowly by their standards, however in recent weeks they have been in outstanding form. That form would face a significant threat on Saturday though as they faced Whitgift, one of the top sides in the country and the only team to have beaten Wellington College this year. Millfield rose to the occasion magnificently though, beating the Croydon side by a superb 30-11 margin and rising to the Top 10 of the Daily Mail Trophy.

St John’s Leatherhead

St John’s have had a wonderful season to date, only losing against some of the very best teams in the country, something that St John’s are now on the cusp of as they are now ranked 12th in the country following their outstanding win on Saturday. It really was outstanding. They were expected to beat KCS Wimbledon but a 67-15 margin had to be more than anyone was expecting of them, a brilliant victory.

Wellington College

Wellington College faced perhaps their biggest test of the season on Saturday as they travelled to Harrow, their closest rivals this year. The teams sat 1st and 2nd in the Daily Mail Trophy table ahead of the game, with the winner likely to seal an advantage that would be tough for any other school to close. That looks to be the case for Wellington College after they beat Harrow 20-19 away from home in a performance that showed some real strength and passion, their forwards were outstanding, and probably made the difference in what was one of the great games of the season.
