Daily Mail Trophy: Top 10 – Final Standings

BECOME A PATRON

The Daily Mail Trophy final standings were confirmed following this weekend’s schools rugby action.

Wellington College were confirmed as Champions for the third year in a row last week when they beat St Paul’s, and they were one of just three sides in the Top 10 who were in action in the competition this weekend.

The Champions beat Marlborough College 34-0 to extend their final advantage over Harrow in second place to an impressive 0.88 points.

Sedbergh were confirmed in third place after St Peter’s York beat Pocklington 15-11. A bonus point win for St Peter’s would have seen them climb further up the table, but the non-bonus point win secures an impressive fourth place, their highest ever finish.

Kirkham Grammar, despite winning all twelve of their games, finish in fifth place. That is now three years in a row that Kirkham have gone unbeaten in the competition, indeed they have not lost in the competition in 36 games.

Below them Canford’s stunning late season form has seen them climb from outside of the Top 10 to finish in sixth place after a brilliant 36-12 victory over Bishop Wordsworth’s on Saturday saw them climb up from tenth to sixth.

In doing so Canford leapfrogged above Clifton College, Rugby, Brighton College, and Woodhouse Grove, with Millfield dropping out of the Top 10 following their midweek defeat to Sedbergh, the win that solidified Sedbergh’s Top 3 finish.

Rugby School and Brighton College’s 8th and 9th place finishes come alongside unbeaten seasons, a fantastic achievement from two sides who have been playing some truly brilliant rugby.

The plaudits must go to Wellington College, whose third title in a row is a magnificent achievement. Their points tally, 7.22, is just a fraction shy of their own record highest total, at 7.23. Of the four seasons that the competition has been running, this has been their most successful with just one defeat and no draws from their 12 games, beating their 2014 record that saw them register one defeat and one draw.

Can they repeat the trick next year? With the strength of the Wellington College fixture list they will always be in with a chance, though this year has seen such a shake up in the pecking order that they will likely face fewer top 25 opposition than usual next year.

Either way, it is sure to be exciting!
