Schools Rugby Weekend Roundup: Saturday 7th January

This weekend saw the first schools rugby of 2017, it was a short fixture list, with many schools still away for the Christmas holidays, but there was no little quality.

There were some fascinating results, a number of close games and some highly impressive performances.

Solihull picked up an excellent win away at Bishop Vesey’s, 26-3, to start their 2017 off with a bang. KES Stratford also kicked off with a good win as they saw off KES Aston 14-7.

There was a brilliant game between Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar and John Fisher. The game came down to a single point, with John Fisher taking the victory, 26-25. Things were even closer in the North West as Merchant Taylors’ and King’s Macclesfield played out an exciting 13-13 draw.

There was a stunning performance from Stewart’s Melville as they saw off RGS Newcastle, a side who beat them earlier in the season, by a brilliant 59-0 margin.

Brighton College have a huge game on Tuesday night against Seaford College at Rosslyn Park. They warmed up for that in style with a feisty 39-11 win over St Olave’s Grammar.

The final result to come in from Saturday was a hugely important one for Judd, who have a NatWest Cup quarter final coming up and are looking to build some big momentum ahead of that. They certainly started their preparations in style as they beat Campion 22-5.
