Schools Rugby Weekend Roundup: Weather hampers progress on the first full weekend of 2017

Icy pitches, snow, and rainstorms blighted the weekend’s school rugby fixture list, with half of the scheduled games being either cancelled or postponed.

It made for a rather disappointing first proper weekend of the 2017 schools rugby season, however that was only in terms of the number of fixtures, as far as actual quality goes, there was little to be disappointed by.

Probably the most impressive scoreline of the weekend saw King Henry VII Coventry secure one of the biggest scores of the season as they beat Abrham Darby by a stunning 73-0 margin, made all the more impressive for being away from home.

Manchester Grammar School also picked up a good away win, though not on King Henry’s scale, they saw off Audenshaw 27-7. Shrewsbury were also on the right side of a result, beating Oswestry 20-7.

Yorkshire was one of the few bright spots around on Saturday, and that paid off well for Woodhouse Grove as they beat Crossley Heath 27-8. Over in Macclesfield King’s Macclesfield were also on fine form, picking up a 43-5 victory over St Ambrose College.

There was an exciting result in the Midlands as KES Birmingham and Bishop Vesey’s held each other to a 10-10 draw.

One of the biggest games of the weekend saw Solihull travel to Sir Thomas Rich’s. Sir Thomas Rich’s beat Millfield last week, a highly impressive result. That brilliant form carried through for another excellent win, beating Solihull 47-18.

There was an exciting triangular competition this weekend as Brighton College, Millfield, and Portsmouth Grammar School met. No scores were kept, and the emphasis was on scoring tries and broadening skillsets, with there being no kicks at goal or catch and drives, will all penalties had to be tapped. While there were no winners and losers, there was certainly plenty of exciting rugby, with each side demonstrating the full range of their skillsets.

There was also excitement on Friday night as Whitgift beat St Benedict’s 21-12 at Ealing Trailfinders. There was also action at Rosslyn Park, with Wimbledon College and St George’s College meeting for Wimbledon College’s 125th Anniversary, where both sides contributed to a fine game, with St George’s winning 22-14.
