Schools Rugby Weekend Preview: Big weekend of 15s, with 7s season kicking off too

An exciting weekend of schools rugby beckons, there will be some great fifteen-a-side games but also the first big tournament of the school 7s season.

There is action on Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday, and with temperatures rising we ought to see a more complete set of fixtures than over the last two weekends, though forecasts of rain could see a couple of pitches struggling against waterlogging.

Friday

Friday night sees Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar face St Olave’s Grammar. The game takes place at Sidcup RFC, and should prove an entertaining and close game of rugby. Chislehurst and Sidcup have the superior record so far this season, but St Olave’s will certainly not make life easy.

Saturday

Saturday looks like being a busy day, with a number of headline fixtures vying for attention. Up near the top of the list is Warwick v RGS High Wycombe. Warwick surprisingly lost to Hampton last weekend and will be looking to get back to winning ways as they seek momentum ahead of their NatWest Cup semi final. RGS High Wycombe will not be an easy side to get past though, particularly with Warwick missing a few players due to U18 Academy League commitments, RGS beat a strong QEGS Wakefield side last week, and are looking in fine form.

QEGS Wakefield themselves are also in action, they travel to Hymers College, while Warwick’s opponents from last week, Hampton, are away at Campion.

Sticking in the areas surrounding London, St Benedict’s make the trip to Cobham International, while Tiffin are hosting John Fisher in what promises to be another strong game of rugby.

The excellent Brighton College are in action again, they make the trip to Skinners’. Harrodian meanwhile host Latymer Upper, while in Hertfordshire St George’s Harpenden welcome Brentwood to town.

In Scotland there are some big games, Dollar Academy host St Aloysius’ College and Stewart’s Melville welcome George Heriot’s. There is an exciting Anglo-Welsh fixture as the very much in form Sir Thomas Rich’s make the trip across the Severn to play Llandovery College.

In the midlands Bishop Vesey’s host Old Swinford Hospital, with Welbeck also hosting, again Loughborough, with King Henry VIII Coventry the hosts against Shrewsbury and Bablake making the trip to KES Birmingham.

There are three huge games in the north of the country, with King’s Macclesfield the hosts against Wirral Grammar School. Wirral’s local rivals Calday Grange Grammar are away at Manchester Grammar, while St Ambrose College host Adams Grammar.

Moving back to the south east there is another massive game, one of the biggest of the weekend. St Joseph’s College welcome Whitgift. Over the last few years these two have produced some of the finest rugby in the country, and have played some spectacular games against each other, so expect another good one on Saturday.

Sunday

Sunday’s big event is the major start of the school 7s season, the Seaford College 7s. Sixteen teams will come together for this tournament, which has already seen plenty of coverage.

Those coming include Champions Trophy finalists Bedford, semi finalists Epsom College, Hertfordshire County Champions Haileybury, and former triple NatWest Cup champions, Dulwich College.
