Schools Rugby Weekend Roundup: Friday night lights, bumper Saturday games, and Sunday 7s

This weekend saw games on Friday night and Saturday, with the first big 7s tournament of the year on Sunday.

The result was a busy and exciting weekend of schools rugby, and finally one with the vast majority of fixtures completed as the weather eased off.

On Friday Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School hosted St Olave’s Grammar School under the lights at Sidcup RFC. Chislehurst and Sidcup showed great form before Christmas, and carried that on for a fantastic 38-7 victory on Friday night.

Saturday saw plenty of school action, with some massive games between some of the top schools around. One of the most hotly anticipated was Warwick v RGS High Wycombe. Last week RGS beat QEGS Wakefield, while Warwick lost to Hampton, but this week Warwick were back in form as they beat RGS 22-7. With a NatWest Cup semi final coming up, they will be glad to have switched the momentum back in their favour.

St Joseph’s College hosted another massive game as they welcomed Whitgift, who put on a fantastic performance for a 26-7 victory.

Hampton built on last weekend’s superb victory with another fantastic win, beating Campion 26-8 away from home. There was a good away win for Loughborough too, they beat Welbeck 27-17.

Brighton College remain unbeaten as they secured another excellent win beating Skinners’ 29-10. There was a storming victory for Bishop Vesey’s, who saw off former NatWest Cup finalists Old Swinford Hospital 41-0.

Judd bounced back well from their NatWest Cup disappointment to secure a 47-10 win away at Cooper’s Coborn, while KES Birmingham were 15-12 victors at home to Bablake.

In Scotland Dollar Academy beat St Aloysius’ College 29-19. There was a big Anglo-Welsh game, reflecting the Anglo-Welsh Cup that was also on this weekend. Sir Thomas Rich’s secured victory for the Anglo side of that coin, beating Llandovery College 17-7.

Latymer Upper won 29-12 at Harrodian, with King Henry VIII Coventry 34-5 victors at home to Shrewsbury, while St Ambrose College were 19-12 winners against Adams Grammar.

In the North West Manchester Grammar beat Calday Grange 38-10, Calday’s great local rivals Wirral Grammar were beaten 29-7 by King’s Macclesfield to round off Saturday’s action.

Sunday saw the start of the school 7s season with a big tournament at Seaford College. Bedford were the ones to take the spoils, beating Haileybury in the final 33-12 despite missing a number of top players who were in action for Northampton Saints U18s.

Portsmouth Grammar took the Plate, with St Benedict’s taking the Shield and Hirstpierpoint the bow. Dulwich meanwhile secured the Trophy, and Reading Blue Coat the Vase. You can see our roundup of the tournament here: Seaford 7s Roundup.

The sevens season continues next weekend with more big tournaments, the Shiplake 7s, and the South Coast 7s at Portsmouth Grammar School.
