Anglo-Welsh Cup: Round 4 roundup – Semi Finalists Confirmed

BECOME A PATRON

Saracens, Leicester Tigers, Exeter Chiefs, and Harlequins secured their Anglo-Welsh Cup semi final places this weekend.

As always, there were plenty of young players on show across the fixtures, despite so many players being involved in the U20 6 Nations.

Bristol v Exeter Chiefs

Exeter Chiefs secured their semi final spot with a brilliant 35-7 win away at Bristol. The Chiefs included a young half back pairing, with Joe Simmonds at fly half and Jack Maunder, a big part of the England U20 squad, at scrum half. They even had a schoolboy on the bench in the form of Exeter College’s Joe Snow. Bristol also included a schoolboy, Bristol Grammar School’s Tom Rowland, while play off hero, and former Millfield fly half, Callum Sheedy was back.

Cardiff Blues v Worcester Warriors

This was a thrilling game, with the two sharing 91 points between them. Worcester Warriors, with youngsters like Jack Singleton, Biyi Alo, and Andrew Kitchener in the squad, took the spoils with a 53-38 victory. Cardiff included plenty of exciting players, with Harri Millard on the left wing, and the likes of Cory Allen in midfield.

Gloucester v Newport Gwent Dragons.

Gloucester had one of the youngest sides of the weekend, with rising star Mat Protheroe at full back and Lloyd Evans and Elliott Creed at 10 and 12, while former England U20 skipper Callum Braley captained the side from scrum half. That youth paid off as they beat Newport Gwent Dragons 24-13,.

Harlequins v Sale Sharks

Harlequins may have secured a semi final place, interestingly all four semi finalists are the previous four winners of this competition, but they lost this weekend to Sale Sharks, 13-10. Sale included plenty of youth on their bench, with Cameron Neild, George Nott, and Ben Curry all available, while Harlequins included former England U20 star Aaron Morris at full back, with other former U20 Champions, Joe Marchant and Jack Clifford, on the bench.

Newcastle Falcons v Bath

Newcastle Falcons picked a reasonably experienced side and it just paid off as they secured a 16-15 victory over Bath. There was plenty of exciting young talent in the side though, with Zach Kibirige on the right wing, and one of Scotland’s big U20 stars of last year, Andrew Davidson, on the bench. Bath, in contrast, were extremely young, with Adam Hastings at fly half, Max Clark at centre, and last year’s England U20 captain, Jack Walker, at hooker. On the bench, meanwhile, the likes of Darren Atkins, Sam Nixon, and Will Homer were all included.

Northampton Saints v Scarlets

Northampton Saints, in front of the biggest crowd of the round, put in a stunning performance to beat the Scarlets, hitting the half century for a 50-10 win. Saints’ big score was perhaps a symptom of the amount of experience in their side, though they did find room for former St Joseph’s College skipper, Lewis Ludlam, at openside, while Harry Mallinder was at inside centre. Scarlets had a number of yougnsters in their side, including Billy McBryde, son of Robin, at fly half.

Saracens v Leicester Tigers

On Sunday afternoon Saracens beat Leicester Tigers in a thriller, 29-20. As it turns out, both will be in the semi finals, and in fact will play each other in an exact repeat of this fixture. Saracens will head into that full of confidence, the game was in the balance heading towards the close but a wonderful finish from former Millfield star Tom Whiteley, who just signed a senior contract with the club, took his side to safety. It was a young Saracens side, with Matt Gallagher, Nick Tompkins, Nathan Earle, and Henry Taylor all starting alongside Whiteley. Tigers were young too though, including both Thacker brothers, George Worth, George Catchpole, and Oli Bryant.

Wasps v Ospreys

Ospreys secured the sole Welsh victory in this round of the Anglo-Welsh Cup on Sunday, beating Wasps 31-22 at the Ricoh Arena. Their side included former NatWest Cup winner Tom O’Flaherty on the wing, the former Dulwich College star is soon to move to Exeter Chiefs. Wasps meanwhile included Piers O’Conor at full back, Will Stuart at prop and Jack Willis on the flank, while Merchant Taylors’ schoolboy Will Porter was on the bench.
