School 7s: Christ College 7s takes place this Sunday – Early RPNS7s marker

The draw for Sunday’s Christ College Brecon 7s has been made, bringing together 20 top teams from Wales, the South West, and the West Midlands area, in the main.

The 20 teams are split into four groups of five. The top two from each group head to the Cup quarter finals, with the third and fourth placed sides heading to the Plate quarters, while 5th placed sides are straight into the semi finals stage of the Bowl.

Millfield are the most recent winners of the tournament, beating Kirkham Grammar School 24-0 in the 2015 final, last year’s competition was unfortunately hit heavily by the weather.

Millfield face a tough challenge if the fancy a crack at the title, included in their Group D battle are AASE giants Hartpury College, 2013 champions King’s Worcester, as well as Whitchurch High School, Sam Warburton’s old stomping ground, and Rydal Penrhos.

2015’s losing finalists, Kirkham Grammar School, who have been unbeaten for nearly 3 years at fifteen-a-side, are in Group C. Joining them are a strong Cheltenham College side, who won the 2015 Plate, as well as Hereford Cathedral School and two Welsh sides, Monmouth and Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf.

The hosts, Christ College, are in Group A. Their competition includes Malvern College, Shrewsbury, and a pair of old rivals, Bryanston and Sherborne.

Meanwhile in Group B Welsh giants Llandovery College lurk, along with Campion, Ellesmere College, Wellington School, and Llandovery’s Welsh compatriots, Ysgol Bro Dinefwr.

This competition is certainly one to keep an eye on, it tends to be a real form guide ahead of the rest of the School 7s season.
