School 7s: Young Wellington College victorious at Canford

BECOME A PATRON

Wellington College have been right among the best on the 7s field in recent times, and it looks like they are set for another strong year after claiming the Canford 7s title.

They had it far from their own way though, losing to AASE side Beechen Cliff in the group stages, which meant a second place finish and a theoretically harder semi final.

It certainly was not easy as they had to work hard for a 7-0 win over Group B winners KES Bath, a side who went unbeaten at fifteen a side last term. It was heroic work from Wellington College though, who were down to five men for two minutes due to sin bins, and had just one back in their squad as a result of injuries and representative camps.

Beechen Cliff, meanwhile, were unable to get past Group B runners up, Marlborough College, who beat them 22-19 to set up a final against Wellington College.

Wellington really found their stride in the final though, scything through Marlborough for a brilliant 31-0 victory, despite a squad with five U16s.

Over in the Plate, meanwhile, Canford recovered from a fourth place finish in Group A to beat Millfield 2nd VII in the Plate semi final before beating Portsmouth Grammar School, who finished above them in the pool, by a resounding 38-7 margin to take the title.

Downside meanwhile won the play off between the 5th placed teams, beating King’s Bruton 29-7.

The day was all about Wellington College though, and the possible challengers later in the season of Beechen Cliff and KES Bath. For now though, Wellington College are back to winning ways after a shaky South Coast 7s in February.

Elsewhere on the 7s circuit this weekend, Bedford were champions of the Oakham 7s for the third year in a row, while Seaford College secured the Reed’s 7s title, and Kirkham Grammar School won the Christ College Brecon 7s, Whitgift meanwhile won at Haileybury on Saturday.. Brighton College’s 2nd VII beat 1st VII opposition to win the Brentwood 7s, though full results are currently unavailable.
