Hampton backed up winning their own 7s tournament by winning the Middlesex 7s on Wednesday.
The South West London side took on a strong field that included AASE Colleges, last year’s winners Harrow, and hosts St Benedict’s, among other.
Hampton topped a very strong group that included AASE side Beechen Cliff, who troubled Wellington College at the weekend, UCS, who are having one of their best ever years, and Gordon’s.
That sent them into the Cup semi finals, where they were joined by Group C winners Henley College, Group D winners Harrow, and St Benedict’s, who topped Group A on points difference ahead of Wimbledon College.
Hampton faced the might of last year’s winners, Harrow. The champions performed well, though without their England players they were shorn of perhaps their sharpest edge, but Hampton were in flying form securing a 22-14 win and a place in the final.
Henley College meanwhile beat the hosts, St Benedict’s, to seal their place in the final with a 24-12 victory.
Expectation was that the final would be a close and tense affair, but this wonderful group of Hampton players rubbished that theory with a stunning performance for a 33-0 victory and a second title in a week.
The Plate, meanwhile, was won by Merchant Taylors’. It was contested by sides finishing second in the Group, with Merchant Taylors’ who finished second behind Harrow in Group D impressively beating Beechen Cliff in 26-21 in the final before seeing off Group C runners up Tiffin 19-12 in the final, all without inspirational skipper Will Porter, who is with England.
For both Hampton and Merchant Taylors’ these were significant wins, and Hampton will now be looking ahead to the rest of the 7s season with real confidence. Momentum has played a huge role in school 7s in recent years, with a strong early run almost always paying off at the back end of the season too, Hampton will be hoping that that trend continues.
