Worth 7s: Twenty teams flock to Worth – Brighton College looking to defend title

Brighton College will look to defend their Worth 7s title this coming Sunday.

The Worth School 7s consists of twenty schools split between four groups of five, with the top two from each group making up the Cup quarter finals.

Third and fourth in the groups will form the Plate quarter finals, while those finishing bottom of the pile will head to the Shield, which will start at the semi final stage.

Brighton’s title defence begins I Group C, where they have some tricky company in the form of St Paul’s and Hurstpierpoint College in particular, while Campion and Bethany will also have an influence. Indeed Campion beat Bethany in last year’s Plate final.

The hosts, Worth, reside in Group A, where they will compete against Gordon’s, Ardingly College, and two sides that have been performing very well on the 7s circuit in recent weeks, The Oratory and Royal Hospital School. This group looks wide open.

Bedford will be among the favourites, they are situated in Group B and will be determined to bounce back after exiting earlier than they would have hoped to at Sunday’s Windsor 7s. Their task will be made difficult though by some quality opposition in the form of St John’s Leatherhead and Caterham, both of whom excelled at Sunday’s Reigate Charity 7s, while City of London Freemen’s will also pose a threat, so too Beechwood Sacrd Heart, who complete the group.

Felsted were on the wrong side of the result from their point of view in Saturday’s U18 NatWest Cup semi final, but they showed some fantastic skill and talent in that game and will likely translate that to the 7s field in Group D on Sunday. Life will be tough in that Group though, which contains some real talent in the form of Seaford College and KCS Wimbledon. Lord Wandsworth College will also hope to get into the mix, with Aridngly’s 2nd VII likely to have to fight and scrap their way up the table.
