AASE League: Champions Exeter College off to a flyer


Exeter College got their AASE League title defence off to the perfect start on Wednesday’s opening round.


The Exeter Chiefs affiliates were in stunning for as they beat SGS Filton College 60-15 in one of five games to be played in the opening round.


Northern Conference


Brooksby Melton College, who this year replace Wyggeston & Queen Elizabeth I College, began their first ever AASE campaign with t a bang, defeating last year’s new boys, Bishop Burton College, 48-10 away from home.


The other game in the north was a much closer affair, and an incredibly tight game. Oaklands College hosted Worcester 6th form College and the two hammered away at each other, with the lead going back and forth several times. Worcester 6th form College were the side to edge it, beating their hosts 38-33.


Moulton College enjoyed a round 1 bye, while Gosforth Academy’s trip to Myerscough College has been postponed to the 1st November.


Southern Conference


Exeter Chiefs were the talk of the Southern Conference with that stunning win over Filton College, the champions have laid down a real statement of intent once again.


Hartpury College will surely be desperate to regain their title though, however they found the going tough at home to Henley College. It was a tight first half but eventually the side that have won every title bar last year’s managed to pull away slightly to beat the Wasps affiliates 19-8.


St Paul’s Catholic College and Truro College had relatively similar seasons last year and it looks as though they will be close again this year. The two enjoyed a close battle, with hosts St Paul’s just coming out on top, 24-17. Beechen Cliff were the side to enjoy a bye in the south.


Looking Ahead


Moulton, Myerscough, Gosforth Academy, and Beechen Cliff make their first appearances of the season next week (Wednesday 13th September). Beechen Cliff host the champions, Exeter College, while Gosforth Academy, who reached last year’s final, travel to new boys Brooksby Melton.


Moulton, meanwhile, host Bishop Burton, with Myerscough College welcoming Oaklands College to town.


Filton College will look to bounce back at home to St Paul’s, while Truro host the mighty Hartpury College.
