Schools Rugby Midweek Update: Champions Trophy & Schools Cup begin

It has been a busy week so far in the world of Schools Rugby and there is plenty more to come yet.

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday all saw fixtures, with more result to come in for Thursday’s games as well as further games on Friday.

Champions Trophy

The Champions Trophy got off to a start of Wednesday with the first two games of the first round. Bedford, Epsom College, Eton College Millfield, Tonbridge, and Wellington College were already through thanks to bye, and they are now joined by RGS Guildford and Stowe after their wins on Wednesday.

RGS Guildford put in a superb display to dispatch of Caterham 38-0, you can read more about that game here: RGS Guildford v Caterham. Stowe meanwhile were 47-17 victors against a rapidly improving St Albans side.

Both will be full of confidence heading into the second round, and Stowe in particular will have genuine and realistic aspirations of going deep in this tournament. The eight sides joining these two and the six byes will be decided in the remaining 1st Round fixtures next week.

U18 Schools Cup

The Schools Cup also kicked off on Wednesday, though with only one game as KCS Wimbledon bounced back from a draw in their local derby against Wimbledon College with a 12-5 victory over UCS to progress to the second round, with UCS now dropping to the Plate.

U18 School Vase

There was plenty of action in the Vase as the remaining 1st Round fixtures were played out, after most took place last week.

Bishop’s Stortford High School beat Saffron Walden to set up a second round tie in Midlands B against their local rivals, Bishop’s Stortford College. A 50-0 win for King Henry VIII Coventry of Arden Academy in Midlands A sets up a second round game against Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School.

In London & South East A, meanwhile, London Oratory secured their second round place with a 35-12 victory over Gunnersbury. Elsewhere in that section St Lawrence College were 47-7 victors against Sir Roger Manwood’s and will play Chatham & Clarendon next round.

Sticking in the same section, Wallington County Grammar also progress to face Harris Academy after a stunning 57-10 win over Graveney. Over in London & South East B, meanwhile, Worth secured their place in the next round with a brilliant win of their own, 50-5 against Reigate College.

Daily Mail Trophy

There was some midweek Daily Mail Trophy action too, with Magdalen College on flying form for a 55-7 victory over Cokethorpe, while Churcher’s College put in a storming display for a 43-12 defeat of Reigate Grammar School.

Elsewhere

On Monday Judd carried on their stunning early season form with a 33-0 win over Australian side Ignatius Park. Tuesday, meanwhile, saw Uppingham secure a 31-10 win away at Leicester Grammar, while Denstone College beat Langley 27-0, and Felsted backed up their win over Haileybury with a 47-12 defeat of The Leys, Dame Allan’s were also in action, beating QEHS Hexham 55-14.

Wednesday saw wins for Ampleforth College, Dr Challoner’s, and Claires Court, with further victories for KES Stratford, Bablake, and Harrogate Grammar School.

Emmanuel College and Newcastle School for Boys drew 24-24, while Hayes and Harris Academy, enjoyed big wins. Kirkham Grammar School showed all the quality that we have come to expect of them with a brilliant 55-3 win over Queen Ethelburga’s.

There was also County Cup action, with St Benedict’s beating Latymer Upper 36-17 in Middlesex, while Manchester Grammar were 27-21 winners against Runshaw in Cheshire.

Shiplake College won their local derby with Reading Blue Coat 17-13, with Altincham Grammar and The Crypt also picking up wins. Worksop College continued their fine start to the year with an excellent 24-0 win over Thomas Rotherham.

There were stunning wins for Merchant Taylors’ and particularly Maidstone Grammar. Merchant Taylors’ saw off Watford Grammar by an impressive 40-3 margin, but Maidstone grab the headlines with a huge 70-0 win over Simon Langton.

Thursday

Thursday saw two further Daily Mail Trophy fixtures. Cheltenham College continued their stunning start to the season with a 22-14 victory at home to Marlborough College. Oakham, meanwhile, bounced back from last week’s defeat to local rivals Stamford in sensational style. They travelled to Rugby School, who were unbeaten last year, and put a staggering 49 points past them, without shipping a single one in return.

Merchiston Castle were in even fiercer form in the Scottish Schools Cup, beating Edinburgh RHS by a brutal 81-13 margin. Sutton Valence, meanwhile, were the latest school to take on the Australian touring side, Townsville Grammar, beating them 14-6.

There are still a number of results to come in, incuding the U18 Schools Vase clash between Beaufort and Wycliffe College.

There are also fixtures between Millfield and Coleg Sir Gar, and Monmouth and St Peter’s Gloucester this evening, which you can read about in our Weekend Preview.
