AASE Round 4 Preview: Key round as teams move beyond halfway

Round 4 of the AASE League sees the teams all reach at least the halfway point in the first phase of the league.

Both leagues now have three teams with a little bit of daylight between them and the bottom half of the table, making the next few rounds absolutely crucial.

Northern Conference

Oaklands College are currently sitting at the top of the table, a point clear of Worcester 6th form College and two clear of Gosforth Academy. However they have played a game more than those two closest rivals, so must keep the pressure on with wins.

They travel to Moulton College on Wednesday. Moulton sit second from bottom, they are without a win so far but have collected three bonus points from their two games so will certainly be a tough nut to crack.

Worcester 6th form College, meanwhile, will have to work hard to keep the pressure on, they travel to new boys Brooksby Melton College, who have already picked up a win and sit in fourth place at the moment.

Gosforth Academy, who have scored over 100 points in their two matches so far, make the trip to last year’s new boys, Bishop Burton College. Last year’s finalists look like they might be the form side in the north at the moment. Myerscough College, who currently sit at the foot of the table, have a bye this week.

Southern Conference

There is a huge clash at the top end of the table in the Southern Conference as last year’s champions, Exeter College, host St Paul’s Catholic College. Exeter are currently in third, four points behind Hartpury College and St Paul’s but, crucially, they have a game in hand and a bonus points win in that would see them jump to the top. A win against St Paul’s tomorrow would move them into at least second place, while a win for St Paul’s would put distance between them and the Exeter Chiefs affiliates.

Hartpury College, meanwhile, can consolidate their place at the top of the table when they travel to bottom placed Beechen Cliff. This should be a fascinating game, last year Hartpury’s defeat to Beechen Cliff cost them a place in the final, ending their run of winning every edition of the AASE league, so you can be sure that they will be giving absolutely everything on Wednesday to stop that from happening again.

The third game in the South sees in form Henley College travel to SGS Filton College, who are without a win in their three games so far. A win for Henley College would keep them in touch with the top half, with defeat leaving them a little stranded. Truro College have this week’s bye.
