AASE Round 4 Roundup: Both conference take shape

BECOME A PATRON

Round 4 of the AASE League panned out largely as predicted, with the top half in each division beginning to separate themselves from the bottom half.

With just a handful of rounds left until the league splits, things are starting to look fairly settled in terms of who is competing for the top half.

Northern Conference

Gosforth Academy are looking more and more like the side to look out for in the North. They may sit second, a point behind Oaklands College, but they have a amassed a stunning 190 points in just three games, including yesterday’s outstanding 70-7 victory over Bishop Burton College, who sit in fifth with one win from three.

Oaklands’ spot at the top remains though after they beat Moulton College in an exciting game, 38-24, picking up that crucial try scoring bonus point to stay a point ahead of Gosforth. That result left Moulton in 6th, ahead of only Myerscough College, who had a bye.

Sitting in third, level on points with Gosforth, are Worcester 6th form College. Boy did they have to work hard to stay there though. They had to stage the mot extraordinary comeback. With ten minutes left to play on Wednesday, Brooksby Melton College were 21-5 ahead only for Worcester 6th form College to dig into the deepest of their reserves to storm back into the game for a stunning 24-21 victory.

Southern Conference

The big game in the Southern Conference was definitely the 2nd v 3rd clash, St Paul’s Catholic College’s trip to reigning Champions, Exeter College. Exeter were a little adrift, being a game behind both St Paul’s and top of the table Hartpury College, but they put that right with a superb 36-5 victory to leapfrog St Paul’s and move into second.

They could have gone top, had Hartpury College lost. However Hartpury were on a serious mission. Their opposition were Beechen Cliff, the side that defeated them last year, denying them a place in the final, meaning that for the first time ever they were not the AASE champions. They certainly made up for that on Wednesday, beating bottom of the table Beechen Cliff 24-7.

Henley College, meanwhile, are quietly keeping the pressure on the top three. They defeated SGS Filton College 34-14 and sit just four points behind St Paul’s with a game in hand, leaving it in their own hands to be able to leapfrog them.
