AASE Round 6 Preview: Gosforth v Oaklands the game of the round

BECOME A PATRON

Round 6 of the AASE League takes place on Wednesday, and for a few sides it will be their final game in this phase of the league.

Once each side has played every one else in their conference, the two conferences split into mini-conferences, top and bottom in each half.

With seven sides in each conference at the moment, that means six fixtures before the split for each team – through seven rounds with each team having one bye week. Oaklands College and Hartpury College complete their six this week.

Northern Conference

Oaklands College are guaranteed a top half finish, but you can be sure that they will want more than just that, they will want to finish on top, where they currently sit. They are only there by a point though and Worcester 6th form College have a game in hand over them. Gosforth Academy are six points behind, but have two games in hand. Even more importantly, they also play Oaklands, at Gosforth, on Wednesday. A win for Gosforth would really shake things but at the top, and guarantee them passage in the top half, while a win for Oaklands would go a long way to helping them towards top spot.

Of course much lies in the hands of Worcester 6th form College, too. They travel to Bishop Burton College on Wednesday with the chance of going top should Oaklands fail to get the win, given that Bishop Burton have just the one win and Worcester are unbeaten, the away side will surely be confident.

Finally in the Northern Conference comes the bottom of the table clash between Moulton College and Myerscough College. Neither can move out of the bottom half, but there will be plenty of pride at stake here. With home advantage and having collected a losing bonus point in every game though, Moulton are probably just favourites.

Southern Conference

Hartpury College have top spot all but sown up in the South after last week’s win over Exeter College. Both Exeter and St Paul’s Catholic College would require maximum points to leapfrog them, and even then it might not be enough.

St Paul’s have a chance to make the first dent though as they host Hartpury. If they can send the visitors packing without a point then top spot is still on the cards, albeit it, it is a longshot.

Exeter College, surely reeling after that big defeat to Hartpury last week, have a tricky task this week too, facing a Henley College side that have impressed, and who ran Hartpury closer than anyone on the opening weekend, with a chance of a top half finish, you can bet that Henley will be giving this absolutely everything.

There is an interesting third clash too as Beechen Cliff host Truro College. The season started badly for Beechen Cliff but a win over Henley last week was a real boost, and another this week could see them sneak into the top half via the back door. Truro will fancy having a go at that too after their own morale-boosting win over Filton last week.

It is all to play for to join Hartpury in that top half section!
