The penultimate round of the first stage of the AASE League certainly did not disappoint.
After next week’s games the two conferences split into two top half conferences and two bottom half conferences, which meant teams were jostling to secure those top half finishes.
Northern Conference
Oaklands College, whose bye week is next week, were playing their final game of this section. They travelled up to the exciting and very much in form Gosforth Academy. Oaklands led the Northern Conference heading into it, but having already lost once, they were leading in part due to games in hand.
That at least was the feeling, but they proved any doubters wrong, winning a tight contest against Gosforth 18-17 and holding on to top spot for another week. Gosforth have two games in hand still though and could jump ahead, so too Worcester 6th form College with one game in hand, but to Oaklands it will matter not, they got a headline win and secured a top half finish.
As have Worcester 6th form College who travelled to Bishop Burton College and came away with an excellent 31-17 victory. That draws them level with Oaklands but in second place, and there is the mouth-watering prospect of a Worcester v Gosforth clash next week for Worcester’s final game of this stage.
At the bottom end of the table second from bottom Moulton College hosted bottom of the table Myerscough. A tough and tight battle ensued, with Myerscough taking the spoils 17-12. Unfortunately for Myerscough though it was not enough to leapfrog their hosts, whose accumulation of bonus points has been impressive. They are yet to win but have secured a bonus point in every game they have played.
Southern Conference
Hartpury College were playing their last game of stage one in the Southern Conference, and it was a tricky one, away a very strong St Paul’s Catholic College side. Buoyant from last week’s thumping win over the champions, Exeter College, Hartpury secured a well ought 33-29 victory, secured 29 out of a possible 30 points from their six games and sealing top spot as their own.
St Paul’s remain in third, a crucial bonus point keeping them just one points behind Exeter College, who were impressively held to a draw by a Henley College side that has proved very hard to beat indeed this season, a result that keeps Henley College very much in the hunt for a top half finish too.
Beechen Cliff also grabbed a win this week, moving them just two points behind Henley. It has been a stage old season for Beechen Cliff, who had a tough early run of games but have now won two on the bounce thanks to Wednesday’s win over Truro College.
