AASE Round 7 Roundup: Worcester complete perfect first stage

BECOME A PATRON

The final round of the first stage of this year’s AASE League took place on Wednesday and there were plenty of thrills among the games.

There is still one postponed fixture to take place, Gosforth Academy v Myerscough College in a fortnight’s time, but that aside the first stage is over and done.

The top three in each conferences will split into two top half conferences, still North and South, while the bottom four in each will do similar. That made Wednesday’s games key as teams jostled for those key top half positions.

Northern Conference

Oaklands College were already guaranteed passage, they had a bye this week having already played all of their games, winning five of six and collecting 25 points.

They went into the round top, but finish up in second place after a brilliant win for Worcester 6th form College at home to Gosforth Academy. It gave Worcester the best record in the entire AASE League, collecting a spectacular full house of thirty points from a possible thirty.

That result also cost Gosforth, who drop out of the top 3 behind Brooksby Melton College, who beat Moulton College by an excellent 40-21 margin. Brooksby are level on points with Gosforth but their greater points difference has them ahead.

Gosforth do have the safety net of that game in hand but Myerscough will not roll over easily, they will be desperate not to finish bottom of the table. They had hoped to move off on Wednesday, but Bishop Burton’s 22-12 scuppered that plan, either way that game on November 1st is not to be missed!

Southern Conference

Over in the South Hartpury College were already guaranteed top spot, they had a bye and had collected 29 out of a possible 30 to seal the top spot. Below them though it was all to play for.

Exeter College sealed second place after they put in a thunderous performance to beat Truro College 52-17, a welcome return to top form for them.

The key game was Henley College v St Paul’s Catholic College, Henley had to win to get into the top 3, and so they did, in a thriller, 52-33. The trouble for Henley though was that St Paul’s collected a try scoring bonus point, leaving both sides level on 17 points.

Henley were the ones to seal it though, on points difference, those welcome tries on Wednesday afternoon doing the trick for them.

At the bottom end of the table there was a good news story for Filton College, who picked up their first win of the season with a 29-10 effort over Beechen Cliff, meaning that every single side in the Southern Conference has a win and moving Filton up from bottom to sixth.

All eyes will be on the AASE League when it returns though, which ought to be the second week of November, if it is anything like last year, we are in for a treat!
