Schools Rugby Midweek Roundup: Plate, Vase, & Bowl all move towards QFs

This week’s focus has mainly been on the Champions Trophy and Schools Cup, however there has been plenty of action elsewhere too.

 

Most notably, the Schools Plate, Schools Vase, and Schools Bowl have seen serious action this week, with many of the last 16 places in each competition now starting to become clear.

 

U18 Schools Plate

North A and North B have not seen action this week but in North A St Ambrose College await either RGS Lancaster or Cheadle Hulme in the regional final, with in North B Woodhouse Grove have already progressed and are into the National quarter final draw.

 

Gresham’s 49-12 win over Bedford Modern in Midlands A now sees them head into a Regional Final against Uppingham, whose progress to that point was already assured thanks to a bye.

 

Midlands B has not seen action this week, but KES Birmingham await the winners of QEGS Ashbourne v Wrekin College for that regional final.

 

There were two fixtures in London & South East A as New Hall just edged out Langley Park 20-18 and Colfe’s were impressive 33-24 winners at Salesian, meaning that the Regional Final will be New Hall v Colfe’s.

 

In the London & South East B section Trinity booker their regional final spot with a 33-8 win over Sir Joseph Williamson’s and will play either Peter Symonds’ or Farnborough.

 

South West A saw St Peter’s Gloucester secure a 22-12 win away at Pangbourne College, they face either St Bartholomew’s or KES Southampton in the regional final, while in South West B there was no action, but Downside have already booked their regional final spot and must await the result of Richard Huish v Weston College to find out their opponent.

North A in the Vase still has both regional semi finals to be played, Wirral Grammar v Lymm High and Giggleswick v Bradford Grammar. Ripon Grammar however secured their regional final spot in North B with a 24-10 win over Yarm, they face either Hill House or Worksop College for that place in the final.

 

In the Midlands A section King’s Worcester secured their spot in the last 16 with a thrilling 3627 win over KES Stratford, they will face either Adams Grammar or Old Swinford Hospital. Meanwhile in Midlands B Langley stormed into the regional final with a stunning 88-8 win over Bishop’s Stortford College, they will meet Trent College in the shootout for a quarter final spot after their 36-19 defeat of Welbeck College.

 

London & South East A also has its regional final confirmed, Hayes v Sutton Valence. Hayes’ stunning run continued with a 24-19 defeat of Richard Hale, while Sutton Valence beat Dartford Grammar 27-18 away from home. Over in London & South East B Reed’s secured their regional final berth with a 16-9 defeat of The Weald. They will play either St George’s Harpenden or London Oratory after London Oratory played their delayed third round game against Mill Hill on Wednesday, winning 33-22.

 

Down in the South West Taunton booked their South West A regional final spot with a 24-22 away win at Thomas Hardye, they face either Dauntsey’s or Backwell next time out. In South West A it will be Sir William Borlase’s v The Crypt in the regional final after Sir William’s beat Bournemouth 36-15 and The Crypt won 15-10 away at Dr Challoner’s.

 

U18 Schools Bowl

Akeley Wood 7-22 Leicester GS

Cokethorpe 37-12 Chesham GS

 

The U18 Schools Bowl was a little quieter this week, neither North A nor North B saw action. Midlands A did see action though as King Henry VIII Coventry booked their regional final spot with a 25-19 defeat of Hereford Cathedral School, either Shrewsbury or KES Aston await them next.

 

Midlands B was also quiet, but over in London & South East A Beth’s Grammar secured a spot in the regional final, beating Sir Roger Manwood’s 36-24 and setting up a tie against either Robert Clack or Ravens Wood. Verulam have already made it to the London & South East B final, they will play either St George’s Weybridge or Reigate Grammar School.

 

In the South West Mount Kelly are in the final of the A section and will play either St Laurence or Royal Wooten Bassett. South West B saw Cokethorpe beat Chesham Grammar 37-12 to secure their regional final spot, where either Brockenhurst of John Hampden will be their opponents.

There were three big Daily Mail Trophy games. Denstone College were superb as they secured victory in their oldest ever fixture, 33-3 away at huge rivals Ellesmere College. There was a big win for St George’s College Weybridge too, they beat Reigate Grammar School 39-0, while Tiffin won a thriller at Christ’s Hospital, 38-24.

 

In the Scottish Cup Fettes College and Kelvinside Academy both progressed to the semi finals. Fettes beat Dollar Academy 27-19, while Kelvinside were in barnstorming form, beating Edinburgh Royal High School 49-14.

 

There was County Cup action in Hertfordshire with Bishop’s Stortford High School beating QES Barnet 23-12 and Verulam beating St Columba’s College 15-8.

 

Outside of any Cup competitions there was a hugely impressive 56-0 win for Wallington County Grammar over Ewell Castle, while Radley College secured a dominant 46-5 win over Burford. Simon Langton were in strong form too, beating Cranbrook 4-12, while Gordon’s were 33-17 winners against Reading School.
