Schools Rugby Weekend Roundup: Saturday 20th January

Unfortunately the weather once again played a huge part in the weekend’s rugby, with a number of games cancelled due to snowy/frozen and waterlogged pitches.

However, what rugby did go ahead was enough to warm the spirits plenty, with some fantastic games being played out all over the country.

Five to Watch

Our five to watch quickly became four as George Watson’s v Stewart’s Melville was cancelled, but the four that went ahead more than made up for it.

It all began on Friday at Aylesbury RFC, with QEGS Wakefield getting in some crucial preparation ahead of their Schools Cup semi final against Northampton School for Boys with a hard fought 24-15 over their long-time distant rivals RGS High Wycombe.

QEGS have been engaged in a long term battle at U15 Schools Cup level with Warwick, and with Warwick in the other U18 Schools Cup semi final this year against Whitgift, there is the potential for a repeat of those U15 finals in this years U18 final. Warwick certainly look in good form, they beat a strong Hampton side 24-15 away from home.

Finally to a wet and wild East London, where Brighton College continued their fine form with an excellent 14-0 win away at a very strong Campion 1st XV.

Around the Grounds

Warwick’s Schools Cup opponents, Whitgift, were in flying form once again as they saw off City of London Freemen’s by a stunning 59-0 margin. Christ College were in equally good form, beating Argentine tourists Belgrano 63-0.

Things were tighter in the Midlands, where KES Birmingham won 17-12 at Bishop Vesey’s, but KES Stratford joined the points scoring party with a 42-5 home win over KES Camp Hill. Welbeck, meanwhile, were 38-12 winners over King Henry VIII, Coventry.

Glyn bounced back from a tricky week last week for a good 21-7 win at Tiffin, while Millfield, shorn of a number of players to Bath U18, lost 42-21 to Welsh Academicals.

One of the results of the weekend was a 26-20 away win for Dartford Grammar School against the back to back U18 Schools Cup quarter finalists, Judd.
