Schools Rugby Roundup: A look back at the last week of school rugby

BECOME A PATRON

With half term upon us, there has not been too much school rugby over the last week, but what rugby there has been was excellent.

It all began last Monday at London Irish’s Hazelwood complex, where Trinity beat Hampton 22-15 in a really exciting game.

Then on Tuesday there were two fantastic occasions. First at King’s Macclesfield there was a thrilling occasion as they hosted Argentine tourists Liceo. King’s have been in great form this year and that showed as they secured a brilliant 43-5 win.

The action continued on Tuesday into the evening at Broadstreet RFC where Bablake and King Henry VIII Coventry met for their annual classic, with King Henry VII winning a tense game 22-14.

On Wednesday there was a huge game at Preston Grasshoppers RFC, where Stonyhust College and Manchester Grammar School met for the County Cup Final. A fittingly good contest emerged, with Stonyhurst running out victorious, 25-18, a fitting end to a brilliant campaign.

There was another massive game down in London where Hampton met the Schools Cup semi finalists, Whitgift. The Croydon side showed exactly why they are in that semi final next month with a truly outstanding performance for a 50-12 win that will surely send them into that key semi against Warwick absolutely full to the brim with confidence.

Elsewhere, Harrodian claimed a 26-19 win over Cobham International, while St Edward’s College beat Liverpool College 15-10 and Ravens Wood continued their fine season with a 29-17 win over Maidstone Grammar. Welbeck, meanwhile beat Shrewsbury 20-0 away from home, while KES Birmingham were in stunning form with a 43-10 win over KES Aston.

Over in Wales there was a thrilling cross-border clash between Whitchurch High School and Sir Thomas Rich’s. The spoils went to the Welsh side, the old school of Sam Warburton, 33-17 winners over Sir Thomas Rich’s.

Staying in Wales, there was also some 7s on Wednesday as Rydal Penrhos hosted a small tournament, with Birkenhead, Giggleswick, Newcastle-Under-Lyme, and Oswestry in attendance. It turned out to be an absolute thriller, coming down to points difference in the end. Newcastle-Under-Lyme had the trophy in their grasp, but Giggleswick played in the final game of the day, knowing that a big enough win would secure them the title. They did so in style, sending them into the rest of the 7s season full of confidence.

With most schools away for half term on Saturday, there were just a couple of fixtures. Newcastle-Under-Lyme showed the form they had shown in Wednesday’s 7s could translate to the fifteen-a-side field, as they secured a truly brilliant 42-12 win over King Henry VIII, Coventry.

Meanwhile at Adams Grammar School there was an absolute thriller as King’s Macclesfield came to town. The two simply could not be separated, with the game ending in a stunning 27-27 draw, a fine way to head into the half term break.
