School 7s: Canford School 7s Draw & Preview – Sunday 25th February

A strong field assembles on Sunday at Canford School for the Canford 7s.

Twelve sides will be in attendance and they will be divided into three groups of four teams in each. The top 3 from those groups, plus the best runner up, will head to the Cup semi finals, with the remaining two runners up and the best to 3rd placed sides reaching the Plate semi finals. The remaining four teams will head to the Bowl semis.

Last it was Wellington College that lifted the Cup, beating Marlborough College in the final after a magnificent set of performances throughout the day. This year Wellington are placed in Group 2, and it looks a tricky one. AASE side Beechen Cliff will be tough opponents, they reached last year’s Surrey 7s final, while last year’s U18 Schools Cup finalists, Bishop Wordsworth’s, are also in the group alongside King’s Bruton.

The hosts, Canford, were winners of the Plate last year, beating Portsmouth Grammar School in that final. This year they are in Group 3, where last year’s losing Cup finalists Marlborough College are among their opponents. Also in the group are two sides who enjoyed strong fifteen-a-side seasons, Downside and KES Bath.

Millfield are one of the most successful sides in School 7s history and they are the headline act in Group A. They will face stiff competition, not least from last year’s Plate runners-up, Portsmouth Grammar School, as well as the ever strong Sherborne and Sexey’s School.
