Millfield won the Christ College Brecon 7s on Sunday, one of the key early season 7s tournaments ahead of Rosslyn Park.

The Somerset men were in fine for, topping Group A ahead of the host’s Christ College, as well as Campion, Ellesmere College, and Wellington School.

They then moved into the knockouts, where they produced some sensational stuff. The quarter final saw them rack up the half century in a 50-14 victory over Whitchurch High School, while in the semi finals they were really just as impressive as they beat a strong Clifton College side 33-19, Clifton had beat Kirkham Grammar School in their semi, showing just how good they are.

The final saw them line up against Monmouth, who themselves had enjoyed a strong tournament. The East Walians had tipped Group B before wins over Campion, and most impressively against Hartpury College in the semi final, 12-10.

They could not match Millfield in the final though, the men in red, green, and blue were just too strong, winning 31-12 in their typically pleasing on the eye manner.

Over in the Plate tournament, competed for by sides finishing third and fourth in the groups. King’s Worcester collected it, beating the hosts, Christ College, 24-5 in the final.

They were impressive throughout the Plate, beating Bristol Grammar26-7 in the semi and Llandovery College 26-17 in their quarter final en route to that deserved Plate title.

The Bowl, competed for by those finishing bottom off the groups, was meanwhile lifted by Ysgol Bro Dinefwr. They beat Hereford Cathedral School 31-17 in the final after a 28-21 win over Rydal Penrhos in the semi finals.

Without doubt it was a top quality tournament overall, and one with a number of sides that are sure to compete for further silverware as the season progresses.

Millfield will rightly collect the majority of the plaudits after such a dominant performance throughout, and if they can keep that sort of level up they are going to be very much in the hunt for some of the biggest prizes in school 7s over the coming few weeks.
