School 7s: Middlesex 7s draw announced – Hampton aiming to defend title

The 2018 Middlesex U18 7s takes place at St Benedict’s School on Wednesday as the road to Rosslyn Park continues.

Sixteen teams are involved in the tournament, split between four groups of four teams each after four sides, Abingdon, Wimbledon College, Mill Hill, and Tiffin had to pull out of the original draw.

The host school is St Benedict’s, who are situated in Group A alongside last year’s losing finalists, Henley College. It is a strong looking group, also including Emanuel and London Oratory.

It was Hampton that beat Henley College in last year’s final, a stunning 33-0 effort that helped to pave their way to the Surrey 7s title a few weeks later, and they have looked impressive so far this year.

They find themselves in Group D where the 2014 champions John Fisher are also in residence alongside Christ’s Hospital and Weston College, who move across having originally started in Group B.

Group B still looks very strong without them, with last year’s Surrey 7s finalists Beechen Cliff the headline act alongside the ever strong St Paul’s, and UCS a side that have really impressed over the last couple of years, with Gunnersbury completing the group.

2015 champions Harrow are in Group C and will surely be one of the favourites for the title this year after a stunning fifteen-a-side season and their title win on Sunday at the Uppingham 7s. They are joined by Merchant Taylors’, Reigate Grammar School, and Gordons, who look as though they can all cause each other plenty of problems.
