Scotland U19: Scotland name U19 side to take on Romania this Sunday

BECOME A PATRON

Scotland have named their U19 side to take on Romania U19 in a developmental game on Sunday.

Kicking off at Greenock Wanderers RFC at midday on Sunday, the Scotland squad is coached by former Scotland international Ben Cairns, who will be assisted by fellow ex-internationals Stevie Lawrie and Peter Murchie.

The side is captained by Sale Sharks U18 scrum half Gus Warr, who will miss U18 Academy League finals day for this game. He is far from the only Exile in the squad, Leeds Beckett University’s Ben Appleson is at full back, with Durham University’s Hugo Tasker at openside and Tynedale’s Drew Davison at number 8.

Glasgow Hawks’ Sam Yawayawa is on the right wing, the Scotland U20 international is a former Leicester Tigers and England age-grade player.

There are more Exiles on the bench, Leicester Tigers’ Sam Grahamslaw and Northumbria University’s Liam Cheksfield.

The squad will be targeting places in the Scotland U20 squad for the World Rugby U20 Championships in France this June. While the bulk of that squad will come from the current U20 squad competing in the U20 Six Nations, some players will be added from this U19 squad.

Speaking to Scottish Rugby ahead of the game, Head Coach, Ben Cairns, said:

“We are all really looking forward to the game, it will be another tough contest against what we expect to be a very physical Romanian side. It was great to get the win versus Scottish Students and I know the players have learned a lot from the match. The game on Sunday provides us with an opportunity to put some of those lessons into practice.”

“The majority selected were involved in our first match, however we have also been bolstered by the release of some players involved with the U20 6 Nations squad and we also wanted to give some other U19 players a chance to put their hand up for our final match versus France U19 in April.”
