RPSN7s: Colts take over Day 2 at Rosslyn Park to set up exciting Day 3 knockout stage

The Colts tournament took over the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s on Day 2 and produced some fantastic rugby.

In glorious sunshine at times, a real contrast to yesterday’s big freeze, the rugby was dazzling – as it so often is in this Colts tournament. With all teams in one big competition, it tends to make it fierce.

We started the day with 160 teams, split across 32 groups, and ended it with just sixteen sides to light up tomorrow afternoon’s play.

The day will start with the U18 Vase but from lunchtime the Colts knockout will become the main event, with the Last 16 taking place followed by the quarter finals, semi finals, and of course the final.

Reigning champions Wellington College were perhaps the star show of the day, topping a tricky group A before a brilliant 36-0 win over Cwm Rhymni in the last 32, one of the most impressive sides of the group stages.

They will play Epsom College, and it will be the first live streamed game of the U16 programme last 16 round, Epsom were top of Group D and then came through an absolute thriller against Durham, 27-22, in the last 32.

Whitgift are also through, having topped Group F and then beaten Group E toppers Mount St Mary’s 22-12. They play Sherborne, always a force here, who had beaten Welshmen Cowbridge Comprehensive 24-5, who had topped Group H.

Last year’s U15 Schools Vase winners, Thomas Hardye, were the Group I wins and followed that up with a stunning 43-7 victory over Newbridge. That sets them up to take on Devonport in the last 16, having come through a tough last 32 tie against Llandovery College, 17-14.

Clifton College are another that really impressed. Having topped Group L they then secured an excellent 35-14 victory over Group M champions Whitchurch High School. RGS High Wycombe are their last 16 opponents after they beat Uppingham in the last 32 after heading up Group O.

Next up is the second live stream of the last 16 round in the Colts, with Sedbergh, Group P winners and victors over Ysgol Y Preseli, 21-7, taking on Ivybridge Community College, who beat Belgiam side Waterloo Schools 24-0. Having previously won at U14 level, Ivybridge are a side to keep an eye on in the knockouts.

Cheltenham College’s progress came thanks to a 22-17 victory over Eton College in the last, having previously topped Group U. They take on Bromsgrove, who had enjoyed a cracking 26-10 win over Campion in the Last 32.

There is a cracking fixture between Tonbridge and Hampton. Tonbridge beat St Benedict’s hugely impressively 36-5 in the last 32 having topped the pile in Group FF, while Hampton won a cracker in the last 16, 17-12, over Royal Hospital School, who so impressed in the group stages.

The foot of the last 16 draw sees another cracker as Dulwich College take on the Millfield. Two Rosslyn Park giants. Dulwich topped Group BB before a cracking 38-12 win over Worksop College in the last 16. Millfield meanwhile were the Group EE champions and then turned in an excellent 33-10 victory over Cwmtawe in the last 32.

It all bodes for a fantastic second day of action in the Colts tournament, all kicking off at 1pm.
