RPNS7s: The dream remains on for Cranleigh after a strong opening day in the U18 Cup

BECOME A PATRON

Cranleigh’s dream of three Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s U18 Cup titles in a row remains on after they reached the quarter finals on Day 1.

The back to back champions came through Group A unscathed to reach Cup quarter final Group A ahead of George Watson’s, Dollar Academy, Brooksby Melton, and St Columba’s.

The Cup sees the winners of the twelve pools split into three groups of four for the quarter final pools. The winners of those 3 pools plus the best runner up will head to the semis. The same applies for those finishing second in the Day 1 Groups, they will head to the quarter final pools of the Plate competition.

Joining Cranleigh in quarter final Group A are St John’s Leatherhead, who won a tough Group B ahead of Clifton College. Henley College are also in that pool having beaten Wellington College in Group C in one of the stories of the day, sending the perennial champions in the Plate groups. Whitgift complete the Cup quarter final Group A, they edged out Denstone in Group D.

Cup quarter final Group B in equally treacherous. St Joseph’s College are there after just pipping Bedford to top spot in Group E. Sedbergh join them, the 2013 champions came through one of the toughest pools imaginable to get there, beating 3 AASE sides in the process, including Hartpury College. Harrow came through Group G to join them, the 2016 runners up look very handy indeed, with Sherbonre, winners of Group H, completing the quarter final group.

Cup quarter final Group C meanwhile also looks menacing. Last year’s runners up, Brighton College, are looking strong. They topped group I ahead of Hampton to reach the Cup quarters, where they are joined by Kirkham Grammar School, who had a right old scrap to get through Group J. AASE side St Paul’s Catholic College came through Group K, while 2014 champions Millfield complete the group after a well fought clean sweep in Group L.

The Plate quarter final groups are almost as tricky, Plate Group A sees George Watson’s, Clifton College, Denstone College, and what will be a determined Wellington College side all together.

Plate Group B could easily be a Cup group, with Bedford, Hartpury College, Woodhouse Grove, and Cardiff and Vale lining up, meanwhile Plate Group C sees Hampton, Coleg Sir Gar, John Fisher, and Worcester 6th form College all line up together.

It all bodes for a fantastic final day of action at the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s, and the big question is will Cranleigh make it 3 in a row or will one of these other fantastic sides end their quest? It is going to be absolutely fascinating to find out.
