Sedbergh Super 10s: Sedbergh add National 10s to complete season Treble

BECOME A PATRON

Sedbergh made it two major titles in 3 days and back to back Sedbergh Super 10s titles when they won their home tournament of Monday afternoon.

Having brilliantly won the Rosslyn Park HSBC National 7s on Friday they were full of confidence for this fantastic annual tournament to close the season.

Victory here in Cumbria means that they now hold three of the major school titles in three completely different formats, the Sedbergh Super 10s, the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s, and the Daily Mail Trophy.

In the final on Monday they came across another of this season’s great school rugby sides, Brighton College, the St Joseph’s Festival champions. The two played out a thrilling final, with Brighton College taking a 7-0 lead only for Sedbergh to claw ahead thanks to a try from Bevan Rodd after a Josh Hodge break and an effort right on the stroke of half time from Cameron Redpath for a 12-7 lead.

Brighton hit back to make it 12-10 late in the second half, but the men in brown had just enough in the tank to take the ball through a few phases and see out the game to end their season in the most perfect fashion they could have hoped for.

It capped a superb couple of days for the home side, who had topped Group A ahead of Sedbergh, Stamford, Abingdon, Seaford College, and Barnard Castle. Brighton meanwhile had won a tough Group B ahead of Kirkham Grammar, St Peter’s York, KES Bath, and Bristol Grammar. RGS High Wycombe were the Group 2 champions ahead of QEGS Wakeifeld, Millfield, and King’s Macclesfield.

The top two sides from each group were then split into two Cup groups of three teams each, with the winners of those new groups then playing in the Cup final, 2nd place in the 3rd place play off, and 3rd in the 5th place play offs. Those finishing third and below in the Day 1 groups went into the Plate quarter final knockouts.

Sedbergh were grouped with Kirkham Grammar School and RGS High Wycombe in Cup Pool 1, beating Kirkham 26-12 and RGS 36-0, while Brighton were joined by QEGS Wakefield and Stamford in Cup Pool 2.

Over in the Plate, Millfield saw off Bristol grammar and King’s Macclesfield to reach the final, where they would meet St Peter’s York, attending their first Sedbergh 10s. St Peter’s had beaten Barnard Castle and Abingdon and continued that great form into the final, where they beat Millfield in an absolute thriller, 29-24. King’s Macclesfield meanwhile beat Abingdon to claim 3rd in the Plate.

Back in the Cup, the play off games began with RGS High Wycombe v Stamford in the 5th place play off and RGS, who have produced players of the likes of Matt Dawson, had perhaps their best game of the tournament, winning by a superb 62-5 margin.

The third place play-off then followed, with Kirkham Grammar School showing their superb skillset off for a 24-5 win over QEGS Wakefield to take Bronze.

So to the final, where two of the very best teams of the season went head to head. They did not let anyone down, putting on a fine display of rugby in a close and highly skilled match.

Sedbergh won it 12-10, but there was consolation of sorts for Brighton College as Jon Searle, so impressive at St Joseph’s as well, picked up the Player of the Tournament award.

The main plaudits have to go to this outstanding Sedbergh outfit who truly have had the most remarkable season, and with their Colts having won last week’s U16 tournament at Rosslyn Park as well, it looks as though this run of success could well be set to continue.
