England select Sedbergh’s Cameron Redpath for South Africa tour

Sedbergh School’s Cameron Redpath has been named in the England squad to tour South Africa this June.

Redpath, whose senior school career began at King’s School Macclesfield, is the son of former Scotland scrum half and captain, Bryan, who is currently in charge of the Scotland U20 side and will lead them to the World Rugby U20 Championships.

The young Sale Sharks inside centre played for the England U20s during the U20 6 Nations, and is in fact still eligible to play for England U18.

He captained Sedbergh to an unbeaten season, which saw them win the Daily Mail Trophy, Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s, and the Sedbergh Super 10s, victories that have put the school on the shortlist for our England Rugby Travel School Team of the Season award.

Redpath is one of eight uncapped players in the squad. Wasps’ former Henley College back rower Jack Willis is also named, so too clubmate Dan Robson and soon to be clubmate Brad Shields, who is controversially called up from New Zealand. Danny Cipriani is also named for the first time since 2015.

Exeter Chiefs’ Jonny Hill gets a call up, so too the Saracens quartet of Nathan Earle, Ben Spencer, Ben Earl, and Nick Isiekwe. Former Haileybury second row Isiekwe is still eligible for the U20s, so too Ben Earl, the former Tonbridge captain, who skippered the U20s during the recent 6 Nations campaign. Former Oundle back rower Tom Curry (Sale Sharks) also returns, he too could have been with the U20s this summer, twin brother Ben could yet be.

In addition to the 34-man South Africa squad, Eddie Jones has also named a group of 31 to train at Brighton College on the week of the 14th May. They will largely be focusing on England’s Quilter Cup match against the Barbarians on Sunday 27th May, though the final training squad for that will be named after the Aviva Premiership semi finals.

Redpath is also named in that squad, and he will have schoolboy company in that group in the form of Bromsgrove star Ollie Lawrence. The young centre was a vital part of the Bromsgrove machine this year and has already represented England U20 despite being a schoolboy, and has featured for Worcester Warriors.

Joining them in the squad is another U20 eligible player in the form of Wellington College leaver Ben Loader, who scored his first senior try for London Irish at the weekend. Tom Curry will also be there, as will Marcus Smith, such has the season that the young outside half has had that it is easy to forget that he too is still U20 eligible and only left school last summer, and will be in familiar surrounds at his old school on the 14th May.

Among the other young or uncapped players in that 31 are a couple of last year’s U20 stars, Zach Mercer captained the England U20 side to the World Rugby U20 Championship final, while soon to be clubmate Joe Cokanasiga was a real threat on the wing, while Worcester Warriors’ Jack Singleton has a powerhouse at hooker.

Also among the group is former Scotland U20 scrum half Ben Vellacott and recent school stars such as Tom Ellis (Millfield), and Beno Obano (Dulwich College).

Scotland have also named plenty of youngsters in their squad for their Summer Tour, not least Lewis Carmichael, George Horne, and Jamie Ritchie, who all played in the same U20 side as Vellacott.

Blair Kinghorn and Matt Fagerson, younger brother of Zander, are both named having represented the U20s last year, as well as former Millfield fly half Adam Hastings, who steered the ship for Scotland U20 in the 2016 World Rugby U20 Championships in Manchester.

It is England’s inclusion of Redpath in both of their squads and Lawrence in the Brighton College squad that stand out most though, these two school stars parachuted straight into the very top end of the game.

Both are clearly special talents, and with Redpath favouring the inside centre role, and Lawrence the outside centre slot, we could well be getting an insight into the future midfield of English rugby.
