Round 2 of the 2018 AASE League took place on Wednesday, with the champions, Hartpury College, playing their first game of the season.
Oaklands College, in the Northern Conference, and SGS Filton College, in the Southern Conference, had bye weeks this weeks after Moulton and Hartpury sat out last week’s opening round of the competition.
Northern Conference
Bishop Burton College and Gosforth Academy made it two wins each from two in the Northern Conference.
Bishop Burton College last week won narrowly on the road to Brooksby Melton College, and the Yorkshire Carnegie AASE side were in good form once again as they beat Myerscough College 24-14 on Wednesday.
It was a Myerscough side that lost out in a high-scoring affair last week to Gosforth Academy, and Gosforth were in good form again this week. The 2017 finalists showed their skills as they beat new boys Stourport High School 39-12, condemning the new Worcester Warriors AASE side to a second defeat from two.
Moulton College’s first game did not quite work out as well as planned as they went down 29-19 at home to a hugely determined Brooksby Melton College side, who were keen to bounce back after last week’s defeat to Bishop Burton.
Southern Conference
A huge amount of attention in the Southern Conference was directed at the first foray into the league this year for the reigning champions and dominant side in AASE history, Hartpury College.
People were right to be excited, the Gloucester AASE side put in a truly stunning performance as they beat St Paul’s Catholic College by an incredible 76-24 scoreline – a St Paul’s side that beat Henley College last week, remember.
It was a second defeat on the bounce for Henley College though unfortunately, they lost out to Exeter College, the 2016 champions. No score has yet been registered but it was a second win in succession for Exeter, who opened their account last week with a defeat of fellow Exeter Chiefs AASE side, Truro College.
Finally to Beechen Cliff, who continued their impressive start to the season with an excellent 29-17 victory at Truro College. Having beaten SGS Filton strongly last week, the Bath AASE side look in fine form.
