AASE League: Round 3 sees AASE League blown wide open

Round 3 of the 2018 AASE League proved to be the most seismic of the lot on Wednesday.

There were some fascinating games and outstanding performances throughout, but one result from the Southern Conference stuck out among the rest as Exeter College stunned the reigning champions Hartpury College.

Northern Conference

We begin though in the Northern Conference where Gosforth Academy and Bishop Burton College both made it a perfect three wins from three.

Gosforth faced a really good Oaklands College side, who had started with a bang in round one before a bye week. The Newcastle Falcons AASE side edged it though, winning 31-24 to add to their wins over Myerscough College and Stourport.

Bishop Burton meanwhile faced new boys Stourport, who are yet to get off the mark. Bishop Burton, as expected, came away with a 27-7 victory, but with wins over Brooksby Melton and Myerscough too, they a clearly a side to keep an eye on.

Having lost to both Bishop Burton and Gosforth, Myerscough College were desperate to get a win under their belts as a reward for what has actually been some good rugby. That came on Wednesday as they beat Moulton College in style, 41-5.

Southern Conference

The story of the day in the South was surely that Exeter College v Hartpury College fixture. Hartpury have one every edition of the competition, including last year, bar one. The side that won the one blemish on the Hartpury record, Exeter. Exeter did arrive with two wins from two, but Hartpury’s stunning seventy point effort over St Paul’s last week marked them out as favourites. What unfolded though was a thrilling points-fest, which Exeter College edged 47-40 to send shockwaves through the AASE League.

One side that will surely be looking to take advantage of those changing waters is Beechen Cliff. The Bath AASE side beat Henely College 39-10 on Wednesday to add to victories over Truro and Filton. That sees them head to Hartpury next week unbeaten and setting up an absolute belter of a game that could have a huge impact on the rest of the campaign for both. The Southern Conference just got very interesting!

The final game in the South saw Truro College claim their first win of the campaign, having been beaten by Exeter and Beechen Cliff, they saw off SGS Filton College 24-7.
