Schools Rugby Midweek Preview: Plenty else beyond the Cup!

BECOME A PATRON

There is some tremendous schools rugby happening over the course this week, with action in various competitions as well as some charitable games, plus regular school fixtures.

This week marks the full start of both the U18 Schools Cup and the Champions Trophy, both of which we will preview elsewhere via the links below, meanwhile the Schools Vase second round sees some action, as does the Schools Bowl.

Champions Trophy Preview

U18 Schools Cup Preview

This preview will look at those Vase and Bowl games as well as all of the other non-Cup games going on this week.

Tuesday

Tuesday sees five Champions Trophy games take place, but that aside there is plenty of other exciting rugby.

Clifton RFC plays host to the wonderful annual Ryan Bresnahan Memorial game, Clifton College this year host Millfield. As well as being a wonderful tribute to Ryan, this looks like being a superb game of rugby between two sides that are absolutely flying so far this season, both unbeaten and in sensational form. It should add to what will already be a poignant event under the lights, kicking off at 7.30pm.

Elsewhere we have the first Oxford derby of the season as Radley College host St Edward’s. Both sides look well matched this year, which ought to make for a superb game of rugby, with a huge atmosphere to go with it, one would expect.

There are two games in the U18 Vase, Bishop’s Stortford College host Woodbridge, with Wellingborough welcoming Bishop Stopford, meanwhile Ipswich travel to Hertfordshire to face St Edmunds College in the Bowl.

Wednesday

Wednesday looks a big day in both the Vase and the Bowl. The Vase sees St Lawrence College host Simon Langton and Reading Blue Coat welcome The Oratory. QES Barnet, meanwhile play host to Davenant, with Liverpool College at home to St Anselm’s, and Pangbourne College looking to bounce back froma tough weekend as the travel to Gordons.

Elsewhere, Beaumont host St Columba’s College and Dame Allan’s travel to Emmanuel College, while in one of the ties of the round Reed’s make the trip to City of London Freemen’s.

The Bowl, meanwhile includes Cooper’s Coborn v Gravesend Grammar and Glyn v Cobham International School. Watford Grammar travel to Isleworth & Syon, with Kent College hosting Chatham & Clarendon, and Princethorpe College are at home to Kenilworth. The day’s Bowl action is rounded off by a big derby game as Reigate College host Reigate Grammar School.

Outside of the knockout competitions there is plenty to look forward to too, Llandaff Cathedral welcome King’s Gloucester, while Llandovery College host an all-Welsh clash against Gower College. St Peter’s Gloucester, meanwhile, travel to Marling, with Tettenhall at home to Wrekin College and Sir William Borlase’s in action at home to Chesham Grammar.

KES Birmingham and KES Stratford go head to head in a very tasty looking game on Wednesday afternoon, with Tiffin at home against St George’s College Weybridge also looking like an excellent midweek game.

Thursday

Aside from the final Champions Trophy fixture of the first round, Thursday also includes a cracking looking game between Monkton Combe and Kingswood, while St Ambrose College are in action against Argentine tourists Cardinal Newman.

Friday

The lead in to the weekend on Friday night looks excellent, there is a big derby in Scotland as Glashow High School host Glasgow Academy, while in England there is some excellent rugby taking place in London as Trinity take on Langley Park and KCS Wimbledon go head to head with St George’s College Weybridge.
