The AASE League shows no signs of slowing in the headlines department as another stunning round unfolded on Wednesday afternoon.
A thrilling win for Exeter College at St Paul’s and a commanding win for Beechen Cliff at Hartpury College, of all places, sees those two shoot clear of the pack in the South, while in the North Bishop Burton College took advantage of Gosforth’s week off to create a bit of distance in the table between them and the rest.
Northern Conference
In one of their stiffest test of the season so far, Bishop Burton hosted Oaklands College. It was a tough outing, but the Yorkshire Carnegie AASE side secured at 18-10 victory to put them four points clear at the top in the Northern Conference, ahead of Gosforth Academy, who had a bye week. With the top front-runners meeting next week though, that could all change.
Brooksby Melton College stand alone in third after a sensational afternoon’s play saw them put Myerscough College to the sword, eventually running out 57-0 winners and very much in the frame to be in that top half split after the seven initial rounds of competition are up.
The final game in the North was between the two sides at the foot of the table, Moulton College and Stourport High School, both searching for the first win. Moulton came out hard, going fifteen points clear, only for Stourport to claw their way back in. However a late Moulton College try sealed the victory, their first of the season and an important one as they await the return of their injured players.
Southern Conference
After Hartpury put 70 past St Paul’s, the idea of them losing back to back games afterwards seemed almost laughable but that is exactly what has happened after Exeter last week and now Beechen Cliff both beat them. It was a brilliant performance from Beechen Cliff, putting fifty points past the champions for a 50-19 win.
It put them top of the table, level on points with Exeter who had their work cut out in a big way on Wednesday at St Paul’s. The two scored a combined eighty-five points and were separated by just one in the end, fortunately for Exeter the balance was in their favour as a late score gave them a 43-42 win to keep them level at the top, where they and Beechen Cliff sit over ten points ahead of the chasing pack.
Leading that chasing pack are Henley College, who on Wednesday sealed their first win of the season with an entertaining 36-26 win at home to SGS Filton College, who are still searching for their first win of the season.
