AASE League: Bishop Burton hold position as Gosforth win battle at the top

Bishop Burton College maintained their spot at the top of the Northern Conference in the AASE League in Round 5 but saw their gap significantly narrowed.

Gosforth Academy are now just a point behind, with Brooksby Melton College chasing hard as well. Meanwhile in the Southern Conference Beechen Cliff stretched into the outright lead of the table, taking full advantage of Exeter College’s bye week.

Northern Conference

The game of the day in the Northern Conference was always set to be the top of the table clash at Kingston Park with second place Gosforth Academy hosting top of the table Bishop Burton College. What nobody could have imagined though was quite what a thriller it would be as the two sides shared 67 points, with Gosforth just holding the advantage at a 36-31 final score. Crucially though, Bishop Burton gained two bonus points, a losing one for staying with 7 in defeat, and a try scoring bonus for their four tries. Those two points in defeat saw them hold a one point lead over Gosforth at the top of the table, narrowed from the four at the start of the day.

Brooksby Melton are just three points further adrift after they beat Stourport convincingly, 59-5, and they are still yet to play Gosforth, so could have a real influence in the final placings in this Northern Conference pre the second half of the season split.

Arguably though, the result of the day came in a match that did not really affect the top end of the table too much as Moulton College made it two wins from two thanks to a bonus points 31-22 victory at Oaklands College, lifting them from 6th to fourth in the table.

Southern Conference

Beechen Cliff stretched out their lead at the top of the Southern Conference with a 40-21 victory over St Paul’s Catholic College. They began the day level with Exeter College on 20 points, but with Exeter on a bye week, Beechen Cliff grabbed the full 5 points against St Paul’s, meaning that even if they lose in next week’s massive top of the table clash against Exeter, the worst case scenario for them is that they go back to joint top.

Hartpury College got back to winning ways after back to back defeats, beating SGS Filton College to lift them into third place, leaving the Bristol AASE side still adrift at the foot of the table without a win to their name as yet.

Truro College meanwhile enjoyed a Moulton College-esque rise in the table as they too made it back to back victories, albeit it with a bye week inbetween. They beat Henley College 38-19 to rise from 6th to 4th in the table, just two points behind Hartpury in third.
