AASE League: Round 6 Review – 6 sides confirm top half finishes

Six sides confirmed their places in the AASE League top half splits after a brilliant day of action in Round 6.

The top four sides in each conference go into two small mini conferences (again North and South) after next week’s final Stage 1 Round, with the winners of each mini conference then meeting at Allianz Park in the final in December. The bottom three in each conference go into two similar mini conferences.

Northern Conference

Gosforth Academy and Bishop Burton College both began the day with their Top 4 places already confirmed, but with Bishop Burton having a bye week, Gosforth had a chance to take the important symbolic position at the top of the table. They did so in style, beating Moulton College 64-17 to leave them feeling full of confidence.

Unfortunately Stourport were unable to raise a team this week, giving Myerscough a walkover bonus point lead. That keeps them in with a shout of a top four spot, they are just two points behind Oaklands College who sit in that key fourth position, and the two sides meet next week.

Oaklands College put themselves in such a strong position thanks to a thrilling and superb 33-29 victory at Brooksby Melton College, who despite defeat are guaranteed a top four finish as they lie in third on 19 points – eight clear of Myerscough in fifth with just 5 points to play for.

Southern Conference

Beechen Cliff and Exeter College were already guaranteed their places in the top 4 split, however their meeting on Wednesday afternoon was still hugely anticipated. After all, a win would be a huge boost ahead of their clash in the next phase of the competition. As it was, a brilliant game emerged at Exeter College, with the visitors taking the spoils 24-17 and claiming a bonus point win to leave them with a perfect 6 games, 6 wins, 6 bonus points record in this first phase of the season, with a maximum 30/30 points and a guaranteed finish as the number 1 side in the south the phase.

Exeter College remain in second, where they ought to stay, but they will have an eye on Hartpury College, who also secured their top half finish on Wednesday. The reigning champions, who have lost to both Exeter and Beechen Cliff, enjoyed a brilliant performance against Truro College, 64-5. It sealed a top half finish of third, and that could be second should they beat Henley and Exeter slip up at SGS Filton College next week.

It will be a confident SGS Filton College side, the Bristol Bears AASE side picked up their first victory of the season with a superb 38-19 win at St Paul’s Catholic College, who must now beat Truro College next week to knock the Cornwall side out of fourth place and claim it as their own.
