Schools Rugby Midweek Roundup: Plenty else besides the Champions Trophy & Schools Cup!

While the bulk of the week’s Schools Rugby attention has been on the action in the Champions Trophy, Schools Cup, and the Plate, Vase, and Bowl, there has been a smattering of other exciting action too.

Through Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday there was some cracking rugby going on right across the country, not least on Thursday with some massive games.

Tuesday

Tuesday’s action was all based in Scotland with the fourth round of the Scottish Schools Cup. Fettes College were the pick of the bunch, beating Dundee High School 82-5 in front of former Dundee High School player and former Calcutta Cup winning Scotland captain, Andy Nicol.

Elsewhere there was a brilliant 67-0 win for Glasgow Academy at Morrison’s Academy, while Edinburgh Academy enjoyed a brilliant 54-0 win at Loretto. Meanwhile St Aloysius’ College caught Stewart’s Melville on the hop, winning 12-7.

Wednesday

Wednesday attention turned back to England, not least with a big game between Pate’s Grammar and Cokethorpe, which Pate’s took in style, 45-19.

Moving north, Hymers College’s strong season continued with a 61-0 win over Hill House, while Dame Allan’s were in fine form for a 41-10 win over Longridge.

Brentwood were also in try-scoring form with a 59-0 win over Westcliff High, while Royal Alexandra & Albert beat Reigate College 41-17.

Things were closer elsewhere though, a tight 14-10 win for Reading at Claire’s Court and a 26-3 victory for Latymer Upper at Saint Cecilia’s. Meanwhile in Wales there was a massive game as Llandovery College banished last week’s demons for a superb 26-12 win over Bridgend.

Thursday

Thursday saw some huge head to heads, beginning in Oxford as Radley College enjoyed an excellent 22-3 win over Stowe. The side that Radley had beaten on Saturday, Tonbridge, enjoyed a welcome and dominant return to form with an superb 41-7 win on the south coast at Eastbourne College.

Katherine Lady Berkeley’s host Welsh opposition in Cathedral School, Llandaff, and it was the Welshmen who came away with victory, 24-12. Meanwhile over in Wales itself, Crawshays Welsh XV enjoyed a 26-3 win over Monmouth in a wonderful occasion.

Back to the Scottish Schools Cup, where Merchiston Castle secured their 5th round place with a brilliant 50-4 win at Glenalmond. Dollar Academy, meanwhile, were even more impressive at home to St Columba’s School, winning 73-7 to secure their place in the next round.
