Schools Rugby Midweek Preview: Battle of the Titans in the North set to dominate midweek headlines

BECOME A PATRON

As teams gear up for the half term break, this week sees the last few fixtures of the first half of term take place.

Among them are the last remaining fixtures from the U18 Schools Cup and Bowl second rounds, and those remaining from the Plate first round and Vase third round.

Tuesday

Tuesday sees Queen Mary’s host KES Lichfield in the U18 Schools Bowl, the winners will host St Joseph’s College Stoke in the third round of the Midlands B section.

Elsewhere Blundell’s have a great fixture against local club side Tiverton RFC, while over in Wales Lllandovery College are in action at Coleg y Cymoedd. Meanwhile in Scotland Glenalmond College host Morrison’s Academy.

Wednesday

The game that will surely be dominating headlines this midweek is the massive Sedbergh v Kirkham Grammar School fixture, two of the best sides in schools rugby. Both arrive at this one unbeaten, both are incredibly highly rated and have been among the best two or three for a few years now. These tussles are always massive and this one will surely be too. Not to be missed.

There will also be a fair degree of attention on the Schools Cup fixture, as Judd host last year’s semi finalists, Whitgift, in London & South East A. The winner then travels to in form Eltham College in round 3.

The last remaining game in the opening round of the Plate also takes place with Sir Joseph Williamson’s hosting Skinners’, the winner then takes on Langley Park at home. There is also a second round game between Ripley St Thomas and Cheadle Hulme.

Over in the Vase, North B sees Austin Friars host Hutton Grammar, with a fourth round tie at home to St Anselm’s the reward, meanwhile in North A Newcastle School for Boys travel to Dame Allan’s. Ripon Grammar await the winner there.

Brentwood welcome Dartford Grammar in London & South East B, the winner then hosts Duke of York’s Royal Military School, while in the same section Cardinal Newman welcome The Weald. Hayes will host the winner there.

Over in London & South East A Richard Challoner host Wallington County Grammar with a tie at last year’s Bowl winners, St George’s College Weybridge, the reward.

The Bowl meanwhile also sees some action, in South West A Beaufort face Wycliffe College with the chance to host Cirencester College in the next round at stake. Lady Manners meanwhile host Wales High School in North B, a tie against Runshaw the reward there.

Finally in the Bowl there are two ties in London & South East A as St Dunstan’s College travel to Saint Cecilia’s, while Watford Grammar entertain Enfield Grammar.

Outside of the knockout competitions there are plenty of other exciting fixtures, not least back in the Northern section of the country again as Barnard Castle, fresh from an excellent midweek win, host Yarm.

In the South East Cranleigh are in action after a great Saturday win themselves, they host Seevic College, while unbeaten Hayes welcome Langley Park and Robert Clack travel to Beth’s Grammar.

Norwich, a side in truly outstanding form, travel to Bedford Modern, who are desperately seeking a win. Should Norwich get the win it will cap a glorious opening half of term for them.

Elsewhere Aylesbury Grammar host Dr Challoner’s and bablake welcome KES Aston, while Marling travel to The Crypt in what should be three good games.

Worksop College v RGS Worcester ought to be a fascinating tie between two well matched sides, while Pangbourne College v The Oratory is usually a very good game of rugby, as is Tiffin v Wimbledon College.

Shiplake College are also in action, hosting Cokethorpe, while Wrekin College welcome Oswestry and Desborough travel to Sir William Borlase’s. St Albans will we hoping to put in a strong performance against St Columba’s College at home too.

Another cracking fixture is Nottingham High School v Hymers College, two sides that have produced some excellent rugby of late. Meanwhile there are fixtures between Sandringham and Roundwood Park, and Dame Alice Owen’s and Beaumont.

A couple of interesting ones are KES Southampton hosting the Bishop Wordworth’s 3rd XV and QES Kirkby Londsdale welcoming Sedbergh’s 4th XV, these ties between 1st XVs and lower XVs can often yield some great games of rugby.

Elsewhere we see KES Five Ways welcome Princethorpe College for what ought to be a cracking game, and Grey Court travel to Latymer Upper.

Thursday

There are some massive games on Thursday as a few sides try to squeeze in another fixture before the half term break, among them a cracker between Rugby and St Edward’s Oxford. Rugby are looking like one of the strongest sides around at the moment, while St Edward’s have been getting better and better with each passing week, which ought to make for a great game.

So too should Haileybury v Bedford, two sides maybe not quite hitting the heights of past years but with big long-standing reputations and the two are likely to put on quite the show.

Meanwhile there is a massive derby game between Bryanston and Sherborne, two old rivals who have produced some wonderful games of rugby through the years.

Elsewhere Cooper’s Coborn host Sutton Valence while Dauntsey’s are the hosts against Sexey’s, Monkton Combe meanwhile travel to King’s Bruton, while it is Welsh opposition from Kingswood in Bath as Cathedral School Llandaff come to town.

Friday

There is a massive game again in Bath on Friday night as KES Bath, who are performing well this year, face Beechen Cliff who are in stunning form this year having won 6 out of 6 in the AASE League to top the Southern Conference.

There is also a Schools Bowl game as Ipswich travel to Hitchin in the third Round of Midlands A, a few weeks ahead of the rest of the competition.
