AASE League: Thrilling final round sees second phase groups confirmed

The final round of the first phase of the 2018 AASE League took place on Wednesday, with the final top half finishers confirmed.

 

Those finishing in the top half from each conference are split into two groups, with first and third in the north and second and third in the south grouped together, and vice versa. The winners of each group face each other in the AASE League final at Allianz Park, while second in each will meet in the third place play off, and so on. Those that finished in the bottom half of each conference in this opening phase are also split into two groups, but they remain divided North and South.

 

Northern Conference

 

Gosforth Academy confirmed their perfect record atop the Northern Conference with a bonus point 40-31 victory over Brooksby Melton College, whose superior bonus point record saw them finish third ahead of Oaklands College, meaning that Gosforth and Brooksby Melton will be in the same second phase group.

 

The other second phase group will contain Bishop Burton, who beat Moulton College 36-12, Moulton finish up in the bottom half and will join Myerscough and Stourport in the North 2 second phase group.

 

Bishop Burton meanwhile will be joined by Oaklands College in their second phase group, the Saracens AASE side beat Myerscough College 33-10 to secure their fourth place finish.

 

Southern Conference

 

Beechen Cliff were already guaranteed top spot with a perfect record, but they will be joined alongside Bishop Burton and Oaklands in their second phase group after their results.

 

Exeter College finished up in third place, but were beaten on Wednesday by a resurgent SGS Filton College side, whose recent form saw them ending up in fifth, just outside of the top half. Exeter will join Beechen Cliff, Bishop Burton, and Oakland’s in the next phase.

 

Gosforth Academy and Brooksby Melton are joined next phase by Truro College after their thrilling 32-32 draw with St Paul’s Catholic College saw them clinch fourth place in the conference. Hartpury College complete that group, they finished second on points difference their 39-15 defeat of Henley College on Wednesday.
