Round 2 of the second phase of the 2018 AASE League takes place on Wednesday, and after the Southern Conference sides dominated the opening round in the Division 1 pools, the Northern Conference sides will be itching to hit back this week to keep any hopes of a place in the final alive.
Phase two this year sees the top four sides from the Northern and Southern Conferences in phase one mixed together into two Division 1 pools of four teams each, with two northern and two southern sides in each.
Last week all four southern conference sides won, meaning that the northern conference sides have to win this week to realistically give themselves a chance of making the AASE final at Allianz Park, which is contested between the winner of each Division 1 Pool.
Division 1 – Pool A
Gosforth Academy and Hartpury College go head to head in Pool A on Wednesday, the last time these two met was in last year’s final, where Hartpury put sixty points past the Newcastle Falcons’ AASE side. This year Gosforth dominated phase one in the north, going unbeaten, while Hartpury had a tricky time in the south, losing twice. However last week Gosforth went down to Truro College, who were 4th in the South, while Hartpury beat Brooksby Melton, making this one very interesting. Gosforth will surely want revenge after last year’s final.
The other game in Pool A sees Truro travel to Brooksby Melton after that shock victory at Gosforth last time out. It will have filled them with confidence, but Brooksby Melton will undoubtedly prove a strong challenge having performed well all season.
Division 1 – Pool B
Pool B sees a North v North and a South v South set of head to heads, meaning there is form from this season to look back on. Bishop Burton College host Oaklands College, and in the corresponding fixture in September, Bishop Burton won 18-10. They will probably start as favourites, but this will doubtless be another tough game.
The other game sees Exeter College host Beechen Cliff, both sides beat Hartpury in Phase 1, demonstrating their quality, but Beechen Cliff went unbeaten including a 24-17 victory at Exeter. It was a close game though and Exeter will be keen not to allow defeat to Beechen Cliff twice in a season, but Beechen Cliff have a huge chance of reaching the final and challenging for the title and will be itching for victory.
Division 2 – North
Stourport High School have a week off after their first victory of the season last week, beating Moulton. Moulton have a chance to make amends this week when they host Myerscough College, though having been beaten 41-5 by them earlier in the season they know they will need one of their top performances of the year.
Division 2 – South
St Paul’s Catholic College sit out this week after an exciting win away at Henley College last week. Henley now travel to SGS Filton College, whose from really picked up at the tail end of phase 1, but whom Henley did beat 36-26 when the two sides met back in September.
