Schools Rugby Midweek Roundup: Superb week of rugby as final few quarter finalists confirmed

BECOME A PATRON

It has been a brilliant week of schools rugby, with that magnificent game at Broadstreet RFC on Wednesday evening and a whole host of other superb games, including some key fixtures in the Schools Cup.

Across all four of the Cup competitions, the Schools Cup, Schools Plate, Schools Vase, and Schools Bowl, the quarter finals are now fully confirmed, bar the fourth quarter final in the Schools Cup where Seaford College must wait until Dean Close play Marlborough College, following Dean Close’s late third round win over Sir Thomas Rich’s this week.

Tuesday

There was just the one game on Tuesday but it was a key one as Mount Kelly put in a stunning performance to beat Sheldon 56-0 in the Schools Bowl South West A regional final. It sets up a massive quarter final, where they will travel to the London & South East B winners, Ravens Wood.

Wednesday

Wednesday was massive, the lead item was that stunning Sedbergh v Wellington College game at Broadstreet RFC, which you can read more about here: Late drama at Broadstreet in schoolboy epic. Suffice to say here that it was a spectacular game of rugby.

There were some absolutely key knockout games too. In the Schools Cup Ivybridge Community College won an absolute nail-biter against Portsmouth Grammar, surviving a last minute penalty attempt from the visitors to progress to the quarter finals as the South West A champions, where they face Whitgift, who were in action on Thursday. The Cup also saw South West B playing catch up as Dean Close beat Sir Thomas Rich’s 14-6, they now host Marlborough College in the final last 16 game of the competition with the winner heading to Seaford College in the quarter finals.

The Plate also saw plenty of action, not least in a brilliant performance from Bloxham against the Schools Vase holders Langley that included a hat-trick from, who else, Alfie Barbeary and a man of the match performance from Dan Eckersley en route to a stunning 43-7 victory. It sends them to the quarter finals, where they travel to the North A winners, Cheadle Hulme.

The Plate also saw Old Swinford Hospital secure a tight and tense 15-10 victory over Trent College to send them to the quarter finals as Midlands B champions, a trip to North B winners Hymers College is their reward.

Over in the Vase, meanwhile, there was one game an exciting 29-19 victory for Bishop Vesey’s Grammar at KES Stratford in a game that saw the lead change hands five times. They progress as Midlands B champions, with Worksop College their hosts in the quarter finals.

Finally to the Bowl, where Wycliffe College claimed an excellent 34-0 win over St Bartholomew’s and Hitchin were even more impressive for a 48-0 victory over Robert Smyth. Wycliffe now host Glyn in their quarter final, while Hitchin will host Ampleforth College, who were in action on Thursday.

There was plenty of County Cup action too, not least a brilliant 52-12 victory for Hampton over London Oratory in the Middlesex final at Allianz Park.

Elsewhere Eltham College’s fine season continued with a 31-15 victory over New Hal, while Dr Challoner’s were flying against Dame Alice Owens, 45-5. There were also wins for Oakwood Park, Chislehurst & Sidcup, and Dame Allan’s, while Christ College Brecon beat Cathedral School Llandaff 33-5 over in Wales.

Denstone College enjoyed one of the performances of the week as they beat Kings Macclesfield by a brilliant 45-0 margin away from home, Shrewsbury were almost as impressive with a 57-0 victory at KES Aston, while Wallington County Grammar, Bethany, and Llandovery College were all victorious too, as were St Edmund’s College.

Thursday

Thursday was a quieter day than Wednesday but there was a key Schools Cup game as Campion hosted Whitgift in London & South East A’s regional final. It was a tough old game in dank conditions, but Whitgift just about emerged victorious, 8-6 to set up their quarter final at home to Ivybridge.

In the Schools Bowl, meanwhile, Ampleforth College were in excellent form in their regional final, beating Prince Henry’s Grammar School 46-22 to set up their quarter final away at Hitchin.

In Scotland Preston Lodge beat Loretto 29-24 while back in England St Lawrence College were 34-5 victors against Dover Grammar. Colston’s, meanwhile, enjoyed another outstanding victory, beating Beechen Cliff’s non-AASE side 19-15.
