Schools Rugby Weekend Preview: Saturday 19th January

Saturday sees the continuation of the 2019 schools rugby fifteen-a-side season as the final few rounds of games are packed in ahead of the big sevens kick off.

Some major sides are in action, including a few of the contenders in March’s U18 Schools Cup semi finals. One of which, Warwick, are involved in arguably the biggest game of the weekend as they host Hampton. Both have produced spectacular rugby at times this year and should put on a real ship on Saturday.

Another of the semi finalists, Whitgift, are also in action. On Wednesday they discovered their opponents for that semi final when Marlborough College put in a truly brilliant performance on a wonderful occasion to beat Seaford College 19-10. In preparation, Whitgift host Harrow’s U17s on Saturday for what ought to be a cracking game.

Brighton College are also in action after last week’s triangular with Millfield and Portsmouth Grammar, they host Campion on Wednesday, while last week’s opponents Millfield are hosting Welsh Academicals and are looking to bounce back from Wednesday’s defeat to another Welsh side, Coleg y Cymoedd.

Another massive game sees Sir Thomas Rich’s host King’s Macclesfield, two sides that have performed admirably throughout the season, while St Benedict’s trip to Northampton School for Boys should produce another excellent game.

Over in Scotland there are some excellent clashes, not least the heavyweight George Watson’s College v Stewart’s Melville game, meanwhile Glasgow Academy host Dundee High School and Kelvinside Academy host Morrison’s Academy.

Merchiston Castle, meanwhile, face club opposition in the form of Ayr, while St Columba’s host Hutchesons’ Grammar.

Back in England Wilmslow High School welcome Isle of Man side St Ninian’s, and staying in the North West St Anselm’s are at home to St Ambrose College, while Manchester Grammar make the trip to Crossley Heath.

In the Midlands Shrewsbury travel to Adams Grammar, while Bablake have a tricky fixture at home to Sedbergh’s 2nd XV, and KES Stratford travel to KES Camp HIll. Bishop Vesey’s and Old Swinford Hospital will surely put on one of the best games in the region though having performed so well throughout the season. Solihull are also in action and their game at home to Loughborough Grammar should be a good one, so too King Henry VIII Coventry’s trip to Repton.

Over in the South East John Fisher are in action once again, they make the short trip to Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar, while Coopers’ Coborn welcome St George’s Harpenden. Meanwhile St Joseph’s College travel from Suffolk to Kent to take on Skinners’.
