School 7s: South Coast 7s Preview – Sunday 3rd February

BECOME A PATRON

Sunday sees one of the highlights of the School 7s calendar, the South Coast 7s at Portsmouth Grammar School.

Sixteen teams will be in attendance, and among the sixteen there are plenty that will likely be competing for major honours towards the end of term.

The sides are divided into four groups of four, with the top two advancing to the Cup quarter finals, the bottom two to the Shield quarters. Cup quarter final winners progress to the Cup semis, while the losers head to the Plate semis, meanwhile Shield quarter final winners head to the Shield semis and the loses will compete in the Bowl semis.

Brighton College are the defending champions after their 19-0 defeat of Wellington College in last year’s final. Wellington College do not return this year despite so many year’s of success, heading instead to the Shiplake 7s, for which you can see the draw here: Shiplake 7s draw.

Brighton defend their title from a tough looking Group 4. The powerful Denstone College are probably their stiffest opponent, however KCS Wimbledon, Plate holders with a 14-12 victory over Canford last year, and Whitchurch High School, Bowl holders, both know their way to silverware in this tournament too.

Porstmouth Grammar host the competition from Group 1, where they face the traditional 7s might of Bryanston and Sherborne, both of whom will be keen to kick off their 7s season well. Wimbledon College complete the group, fresh from finishing their fifteen-a-side season on Friday last week with a win under the lights against City of London Freemen’s.

Last year’s Plate runners up, Canford, and in Group 2 and they will face an Epsom College side that will be heavily fancied on the 7s field this year following their run to the Champions Trophy final on the fifteen-a-side field. RGS Guildford, who lost out to Millfield in last year’s Shield final, and Royal Hospital School complete the group.

Group 3 features 2017 champions Millfield, who won a thrilling final 22-21 against Brighton that year before winning the Shield last year. They will be among the favourites but they find themselves in a brutally tough group, with both Bishop Wordsworth’s and Marlborough College likely to be particularly strong after excellent fifteen-a-side seasons. Peter Symonds’ will be hoping for big performances too after they reached last year’s Bowl final.
