Schools Rugby Midweek Preview: 15s, 7s, and a cracking game under the lights

After a weather hit weekend of schools and age-grade rugby, the hope is that this week’s midweek rugby will not be hit too hard.

There are some great fixtures taking place, with some 7s hopefully thrown into the mix as well. Although the question must still be asked, is there any good reason why 7s could not be moved to the Summer Term in a bid to avoid mass cancellations due to the weather?

Wednesday

One of the biggest games of the week sees two of Northampton Saints’ partner schools go heat to head, Northampton School for Boys and St Joseph’s College. Both play some spectacular rugby at times so it should be a superb game.

As should Old Swinford Hospital v KES Stratford, two sides capable of plenty of excitement. Sticking in the Midlands there is a good looking game between Bablake and Kenilworth, while Welbeck, confident after their win on Saturday, host Shrewsbury, and Sandringham welcome Beaumont.

Manchester Grammar were hit by the weather last week but will hope for action this week as they host Runshaw College. Moving further north there is a Durham derby as Durham School host East Durham College.

Down in the South Ravens Wood make the trip to Beth’s Grammar, with Latymer Upper hosting Howard of Effingham and Harris City Academy welcoming Langley Park. Harrodian meanwhile make the trip to Cobham International.

Over in Coventry, Henley College host St Peter’s Gloucester for what should prove a strong game of rugby.

Friday

Friday sees arguably the biggest game of the week as St Benedict’s, fresh from a great win over RGS High Wycombe, host a Hampton side that has played some fantastic rugby all season. Grasshoppers RFC hosts the 6pm kick off, the host club of that win for St Benedict’s on Saturday so familiarity should breed confidence there. Hampton will be confident too though, they have put in some absolutely stunning performances at times over the last five months.

7s

On Wednesday Rydal Penrhos hsot a small 7s tournament. 6 schools will gather, Birkenhead, Bradford Grammar, Giggleswick, Newcastle-Under-Lyme, Oswestry, and Rydal Penrhos themselves.

Last year Giggleswick took the title on points difference ahead of Newcastle-Under-Lyme, the tournament takes the form of a small league, and it looks set to be equally close this year. The tournament has expanded slightly though, up from five teams to six with the addition of Bradford Grammar School.
