Schools Rugby Midweek Roundup: 15s and 7s produce exciting results

This week saw some exciting rugby, including a return to 7s after last week’s tournaments were swept aside by the weather.

The 7s was hosted by Rydal Penrhos and took a league table format with six sides entering. Giggleswick were the defending champions but it was newcomers Bradford Grammar School that came away with the spoils.

The Yorkshire side won five from five to top the table ahead of their nearest challengers, Newcastle-Under-Lyme, who won three of their five games. For all six sides though it was a valuable first foray into the 7s season and should set them up nicely for the tournaments ahead.

On the fifteen-a-side field there were some cracking contests too, not least a victory for Northampton School for Boys against St Joseph’s College. Northampton scored late on to seal a hard fought 26-17 victory.

Old Swinford Hospital have been in excellent form and they continued that on Wednesday for a 37-17 victory over KES Stratford, while Manchester Grammar have also been playing well, they secured a 26-12 victory at home to Runshaw College.

Beaumont secured arguably the most impressive scoreline of the day with a 55-0 victory against Sandringham, while Howard of Effingham won 32-17 away at Latymer Upper and Cobham International were 24-20 winners at home to Harrodian.

Ravens Wood looked good for a 36-7 victory at Beth’s Grammar, meanwhile Harris City Academy saw off Langley Park in a tight game, 22-17.

On Thursday afternoon, meanwhile, there was a stunning victory for RGS High Wycombe, one of their best of the season as they beat old rivals and fellow schools rugby legends, QEGS Wakefield, 48-5.
