With the half term break drawing to a close, the 7s season returns this weekend with the prestigious Christ College Brecon 7s.

Twenty schools will meet in Wales, split across four groups of five each, with the top two sides in each group heading to the Cup quarter finals. Third and fourth in each group head to the Plate quarter finals, while the team finishing bottom of each group will go to the Bowl semis finals.

Millfield are the reigning champions, they beat Monmouth 31-12 in last year’s final, and the Somerset side return in Group D this year. Alongside them are last year’s Bowl champions, Ysgol Bro Dinefwr, who beat Hereford Cathedral School 31-17. Joining those two are Malvern College, Colston’s, and Hartpury College’s 2^nd VII.

Hartpury send two squads to the this tournament and the 1^st VII are in Group C alongside Welsh giants Llandovery College, as well as Ellesmere College, Eastbourne College, and a very strong Bristol Grammar School.

Hosts Christ College are in Group A. Last year they were runners up in the Plate, losing 24-5 to King’s Worcester. This year the Cup will be their aim but they are in a tough group alongside back to back Schools Cup champions and semi finalists again this year, Warwick. Also joining them are Dean Close, who have three players in the England U18 squad, as well as Bowl runners up Hereford Cathedral School, and Welsh side Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf.

Group B meanwhile includes last year’s Plate champions King’s Worcester, as well as last year’s losing Cup finalists, Monmouth and their fellow Welshmen Cowbridge. Among the favourites for the tournament will be Kirkham Grammar School, who won the tournament back in 2017. Campion round off Group B.
