School 7s: Christ’s Hospital host a strong field for Sunday’s Sussex Schools 7s

Christ’s Hospital will host the Sussex Schools 7s on Sunday as the 7s season returns following the half term break.

Twenty schools will gather, split into four groups of five teams. The winner of each group will progress to the Cup semi finals, while second place will head to the Plate semis finals, third to the Shield semis, and fourth to the Bowl semi finals.

Epsom College are the reigning champions, having beaten Brighton College 24-10 in last year’s final. Epsom are drawn into Group 2, where they will face stiff competition in the form of a Caterham side that have impressed all through 2018/19. Joining those two are Pangbourne college, King’s Canterbury, and Worth.

Brighton College, meanwhile are drawn in Group 1, where Felsted will likely be their greatest challengers after another successful fifteen-a-side season. New Hall will also be major contenders, with Cardinal Newman and Reigate Grammar also pushing hard in this group.

Brighton are also sending a 2nd VII, they head to Group 4 where they will face a Dulwich College side that have already picked up one major title this season, winning the Seaford 7s at the start of the 7s season. Alongside those two are the reigning Shield champions, Peter Symonds’ College, as well as Robert Clack and AASE side Henley College.

The hosts, Christ’s Hospital, are located in Group 3, where Hurstpierpoint College are one of their opponents, and a side that will surely be pushing hard for a challenge at the title. Alongside them are two dangerous sides in Wimbledon College and Wisbech Grammar, with the final spot in the group still open.

With the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s just a month away, this tournament and all of those coming up over this next month will be key, a good run here will fuel sides with confidence ahead of a tilt at the National Titles.

There is also a girls tournament, with eight sides competing. Caterham, Epsom College, Peter Symonds’ College, and Robert Clack are all in Group A, while Group B sees Pangbourne College, Reigate Grammar, and Worthing College all joining the hosts, Christ’s Hospital.
