Millfield made it back to back Christ College Brecon 7s triumphs on Sunday as they sealed this major 7s title once again.
The Somerset side are always one of the top 7s outfits in schools rugby and they showed their abilities again as they came out of top of a strong field in Wales.
They had topped their Group, consisting of themselves, Colston’s, Hartpury College’s 2nd VII, Malvern College, and Ysgol Bro Dinefwr, and with the top two from each group heading to the Cup quarter finals, that sent them through alongside Colston’s.
Their reward was a quarter final against AASE champions and schools rugby giants, Hartpury College. Their 1st VII had finished second in Group 3, just behind Llandovery College. Millfield secured the win there, by an impressive 38-7 margin, setting up a semi final against Cowbridge, who had topped Group 2 in impressive fashion, pushing a really strong Kirkham Grammar group into second and also finishing ahead of Monmouth, King’s Worcester, and Campion.
Cowbridge beat Group 1 runners up Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf 28-19 in their quarter final, but could do little about Millfield’s running threat in the semi final, falling to a 31-19 victory.
That set up a final for Millfield against Welsh rugby legends, Llandovery College. Llandovery had beaten Hartpury to top spot in Group 3 ahead of a quarter final victory over Colston’s 31-5, and a 28-19 victory in the semi final against Group 1 winners, Dean Close.
Millfield once again were in fine form in the final (which you can watch below, along with the Plate and Bowl finals, thanks to Christ College), winning 34-19 to seal their back to back Christ College Brecon 7s title.
The Plate meanwhile saw Eastbourne College claim the title. Their route was an odd one, finishing up without a win in Group 3 but making it through to the Plate as Bristol Grammar were unable to compete, they finished fourth rather than fifth in the group, and with third and fourth making the plate quarters, they were through, alongside Ellesmere College.
Eastbourne then beat Hartpury’s 2nd VII and Monmouth before setting up a final against Ellesmere, who had beaten them in the group. Eastbourne had their revenge though, winning 33-17 to claim the title.
Meanwhile the Bowl, for those finishing bottom of the groups, was straight to the semi finals, where Campion beat Hereford Cathedral 31-7 to head to the final against Malvern College, who had a semi final bye. Campion then backed up that semi final performance to beat Malvern 24-10, claiming the Bowl title.
Ultimately though the day was about that Millfield victory to claim back to back Christ College Brecon 7s titles. They will surely be hoping to use it as a springboard for further 7s success this year, with an ultimate eye on the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s at the end of March.
