School 7s: Colston’s 7s Preview – 16 sides set to compete

Among the many 7s tournaments on Sunday is the Colston’s 7s, smaller than some of the others but absolutely packed with quality sides and strong competition.

In all there are sixteen teams in attendance, split between four groups of four, with the winners heading to the Cup semi finals, second place to the Plate semis, third to the Shield semis, and the side finishing fourth in the groups heading to the Trophy semi finals.

In recent times the tournament only seems to be happening in odd years, with both 2018 and 2016 falling foul of the weather, leaving Kirkham Grammar School, 2017, and Sherborne, 2015, as the most recent two winners.

Of them, only Kirkham are in attendance, Sherborne are at the Marches 7s, and the North Western side are drawn in Group A alongside the side they beat in that 2017 final, Abingdon. Kirkham will take some stopping and will be among the favourites for the tournament, but it is a tough Group A, Abingdon, Bristol Grammar, and King’s Bruton will all be pressing hard.

Another side that could go a very long way and will surely be considered among the favourites are Clifton College. They are drawn in Group B, where their competition are St Laurence and Bath rivals KES Bath and Kingswood.

The hosts, Colston’s, are drawn in Group C and have looked good throughout 2018/19. Their group includes Queen Elizaebeth’s Hospital School, Wellington School, and Exeter School, who won the Plate in 2017.

Group D, meanwhile will likely be highly competitive. King’s College Taunton, Prior Park College, and Taunton School will all fancy their chances of a scrap for a Cup semi final. In theory Marlborough College would be favourites for that spot though, however with a Schools Cup semi final on the 9th March, they will more than likely send a second string side.
