Bromsgrove laid down an early 7s season marker at the Solihull 7s on Wednesday, beating Bloxham by a stunning 50-5 margin in the final to seal the Cup.
Ahead of the tournament if there were two sides to pick out it would have been those two, but few could have imagined such a stunning margin of victory in the final from Bromsgrove.
The 2015 and 2016 Schools Cup champions were on form all day, finishing top of Group C, a group that included the tricky Sir Thomas Rich’s, before beating Bishop Vesey’s Grammar, who had only just finished behind Bloxham in Group A, 33-15 in the quarter finals.
The semi finals saw them up against Group D winners Coleg y Cymoedd, who had seen off Ellesmere College in their quarter final. It was a one of Bromsgrove’s toughest games of the afternoon, but they came through it by a score to win 28-21, setting up that final against Bloxham.
Bloxham, meanwhile, had topped Group A before winning a close quarter final against Sir Thomas Rich’s 24-17, sending them to a semi final against Group D runners up Loughborough Grammar, which they won 27-10.
Anticipation was for a blockbuster final, however Bromsgrove were simply sensational as they blasted away to that 50-5 victory. It capped a truly wonderful tournament, which in total across eight games saw them concede a miserly 58 points while scoring 328 of their own. Chief among those scorers were a pair of L6th pupile, Oliver Wynn and Cameron Ritchie, sharing twenty tries between them.
The Cup had been contested by those sides finishing in the top two in the group stages, the Plate, meanwhile, was contested by those finishing in third. With just four groups, that meant the Plate went straight to the semi finals. That meant the AASE side, Stourport High School, from Group A facing KES Stratford, from Group C, and host side Solihull, from Group B, facing Group D’s Warwick, who had to send a 2nd VII given their Schools Cup semi next weekend.
Stourport saw off KES Stratford 28-10 while Solihull beat Warwick 17-5, which send the hosts into the final. However there was little they could do to stop Stourport High School, who won 31-10 to seal the Plate.
The day really was all about Bromsgrove though, who now head to the Oakham 7s on Sunday full of confidence and surely as one of the favourites now having sealed the silverware here at Solihull.
