School 7s: Kirkham Grammar secure Colston’s 7s title

Kirkham Grammar School were on form this weekend as they secured the main silverware at the Colston’s 7s.

As in the fifteen-a-side season, the North Western side are putting in the miles as they look to stretch themselves against sides from all over the country.

Sunday therefore meant a trip South West to Colston’s, where Bristol Bears’ Director of Rugby Pat Lam was in attendance following his side’s drama filled Gallagher Premiership win against Gloucester on Friday night.

Little wonder, with strong Bristol catchment sides such as Bristol Grammar, Clifton College, and the hosts themselves, Colston’s, in attendance.

Those three performed well, Clifton College and Colston’s winning their groups, Bristol Grammar finishing narrow runners up to Kirkham in Group A, while King’s College Taunton won the final group, Group D.

Ahead of the tournament though it was Kirkham and Clifton that looked the likely standout sides, though there was also a sense that Bristol Grammar could cause plenty of problems too.

Broadly speaking, that was how things turned out, Kirkham topped Group A but their victory over Bristol Grammar was a tight one, 19-12, and saw both through to the Cup quarters.

The quarters were as far as Bristol Grammar would get in the Cup though as Clifton College showed the class that had seen them waltz through Group B for a 33-12 victory.

That one sent Bristol Grammar into the Plate, where they demonstrated their quality to come away with the silverware, putting on an impressive display in the final to beat KES Bath 41-0.

For Clifton, their Cup run continued as they beat King’s College Taunton to send them into the final against Kirkham Grammar School, who had beaten KES Bath and the hosts, Colston’s to reach the final.

It was the final it deserved to be, given the quality of the two sides in it, a tight contest between two superb teams. They could barely be separated, but it was Kirkham that came away with the spoils, winning 26-22.

Kirkham rightly will take plenty of the plaudits for their play and for claiming the silverware, but both sides will look ahead to the rest of the 7s season to come filled with plenty of confidence. Keep an eye on these two!
